its probably paint with a hand applied glaze over the surface / specialized finish. I dont think its a "burnished finish" ..but the idea is to mimic that. I think. Rustic cherry with a medium to deep stain and then a glaze in pewter would not be difficult . Replicating specialized finishes in one's shop might better be sacrificed for what you can do with what you have available. There are a few things going on in the picture...the contrast of the wood w all white counters and splash..the use of glass doors..the height of the doors and the "burnished " effect..the rich rug which plays to the deep tones..... The summ is greater than the individual components. I think the finish itself is just part of the whole and not particularly special./ but yes it's nice. What do you have to work with / easily obtained? rustic cherry w "brown highlights" go a little deeper...highlighting or glazing with help from your finisher ....make glass frame doors and end up w about as good if not better with the real characteristics of wood you can get.

IMO leave cherry natural and maple is hard to stain evenly. I assume you started with oak since you mnetion too much grain . I like birch for staining not too much grain but it also has some issues . IMO natural walnut would be my choice if I ever go wood cabinets.
