Do you like the height? It appears low to me. It's a good thing over the fireplace is forbidden--that's just a really tacky place to put one. There's no way to know your version of modern and stylish. I would want the TV hung up on the wall under a credenza or shelf that fits wall to wall in that space. Not knowing the seating arrangements it's tough to know if you need an arm and swivel for the TV to bring in out of that indent for easy viewing.

Yes, I’d get a console/cabinet for under the TV … something with plenty of storage for books. I’d remove the small table and decorate the mantle/add art over it.

A very subtle print wallpaper might look good on just the back wall.

After getting everything situated, see if you’d like any art over the TV. I have art above and around mine (which sits on a vintage buffet) … it just depends on your decor style. If you’re into minimalism, less is more.

You need to measure the width of the space.

The tv is the focal point in the tv niche. You don't need to call more attention to it. The Vertical space to pay attention to? Above your fire box.

Get a LIGHTER colored cabinet, about 36 inches high. Shop under the "dining buffet" category.

When it's all in place? Add above the tv. if you like Keep it very clean and uncluttered....such as three identically sized photos, ..black and white.

Junking it up will not improve it, Keeping it tidy and uncluttered will. Focus your effort on other areas of your space. Purge books and toys, donate the out grown......: )

Declutter before redecorating. Get rid of that small gray table. Why is it there? Downsize as much "stuff" as you can, and put what you keep in a new console:

Put a plain light console under the TV and nothing else. You've got a cluttered dark mess in there now. The screen is dark enough. If budget is tight, start looking on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist with these search words: "console" "midcentury console" "modern sideboard"

Get a large beautiful art work for over the fireplace. and nothing else. This will pull the eye away from TV wall. Right now, the piece you have above the fireplace looks like a small dark TV.

One update often triggers a need for other changes to ensure continuity. Based on what you decide to do in alcove, be sure room is complementary. Here is one look:

An Ikea white console with storage (which will be beneficial). Once accessorized and tv placed on wall, you won’t need anything else in the alcove.

I’d paint room white, so the alcove especially doesn’t feel so cave like, and also the console and fireplace will benefit. Also consider re-accessorizing mantle.

Good design means taking an entire room, not just a section of it, into account. All you showed us was the niche and fireplace so it was hard to recommend what finishes for a console would work with your furnishings since you didn't show them. Like everyone else, the fireplace and niche need to be redesigned together. If you post in the future, show your space from all four walls, then the problem area, so every part of the room fits in with the other areas.

Hallways are a good place to hang your family photos, grouped as a gallery wall.

Some people like to camouflage their TV screen by painting its wall a darker colour so the black screen blends in when the TV is turned off. In that case you'd probably want to use a darker cabinet below it too. I don't like the look of wall art hanging above a TV.

I agree with a cabinet to fit the space. You could just set the tv on top of it and not bother hanging it on the wall.
