Edited to note: This post might seem somewhat off topic because it is a reply to a post which would have been seen below Roberts, but has been removed, I assume by the person who posted the 'opinion' that prompted the reply below. The crux of the post removed was that it is ridiculous to think it matters when one chooses to repot their houseplants. What I wrote below is a refutation of that idea, and lists some of the reasons why the suggestion doesn't hold water.

No one I know of has ever said the only month appropriate for repotting houseplants is June. You are as free to avoid repotting as long as you like, or choose to repot whenever you like, just as you are free to avoid changing the oil in your car for as long as you like or fill the gas tank only when you feel like it, regardless of how much fuel it contains.

The fact is, house plants not grown under lights normally vary significantly in their level of vitality throughout the growth cycle. Stored energy begins to wane quite predictably in mid to late fall, and continues to diminish until after the vernal equinox. What IS ridiculous, is suggesting that repotting when the plant's energy reserves are at their lowest and the plant's current ability to synthesize food/energy remains limited by short days and low light intensity, is not inferior to waiting a bit for the opportunity to work in sync with the plant's natural rhythms and taking advantage of the plant's strengths while making allowances for their weaknesses. I have repotted (fully repotted) many thousands of plants and I can say with a great deal of certainty that most tropicals which are reasonably healthy and repotted or divided somewhere around the summer solstice will recover in a small fraction of the time (a week or two to see new growth) it would take the same plant to recover were it repotted in winter or early spring.

I'll reiterate that no one needs permission to repot their plants whenever they please, but that does not mean that the degrees of comparison from poor to middling to good, better, and best time to repot do not apply. One might consider running a marathon after a week-long drinking binge, but it's probably going to turn out better if one makes an allowance for the lack of verve and wait for a better opportunity.

I agree the best time to repot changes somewhat with the grower's geographical proximity to the equator, and being nearer than 20* N or S latitude to the equator significantly broadens the period of time that can be considered the best time to repot when viewed from the plant's perspective, but there are still good times and not as good times to repot. Keep in mind too, that repotting is much more involved than potting-up, a practice that isn't as stressful in the immediate, but gradually adds to the accumulative stress that comes with the center of the root/soil mass becoming increasingly congested.

Even if we take at face value that someone's winter has been exceptionally warm and sunny and mild, and humidity has been just wonderful, conditions are just starting to gain momentum on the upswing. Unless the plant is in steep decline, we can expect it's level of vitality to continue to improve (where you live) from now until late summer, so the plant would still be the better for a bit of patience.

A plant's ability to defend itself against insect herbivory and disease pathogens is a byproduct of it's metabolic processes. A repot now or in the middle of winter ensures a longer recovery and greater susceptibility to insects and diseases during that recovery than if the repot was undertaken when the plant is at peak vitality levels.

If someone wants to repot now or in the middle of winter as a show of defiance, that's fine with me. I would just hope that others understand the benefits of working with a plant's natural rhythms instead of at cross purposes with them.
