King size bed, mule chest and dresser

Bedding we already own and some rug options I have found.

Any ideas would be deeply appreciated. I do not even know if I am on the right track…

We want a soft-under-foot rug to step out of bed onto. Jute adds a great texture, I admit, but will not be cozy. Any other suggestions? If wool, do I stay in that same color way? I am so grateful for any ideas. Please keep them coming…

IMHO you can never go wrong with a classic oriental carpet. They are timeless and add elegance and color to any room.

You could add a small cozy rug on top of the jute. Jan’s ideas seem quite good together I’d wanna go that direction.

You have basically a 13 x 17 room. You want some brightening effect on the floor. It need not be jute, although that should NOT be confused with sisal! A jute and wool blend is quite soft underfoot. It's an honest combo of fibers as well.

This is nothing against Persian flavors - wool. But would I put a printed fake? No. : )

Could a Kilim be fun? Yes.

But...........this furniture is dark, bulky, casual: )

We have a jute/wool rug and it feels terrific - very nice natural look as well. i think we got it at Pottery Barn

Suggest basing decisions on the bedding (rugs you show are not complementary) and I’d paint walls the cream in bedding/rug choice. A neutral, textured (wool) rug will be easier to accessorize around.

If leaning towards a patterned rug, again work with bedding and if worried about going too dark, walls and drapery will offset.

My monitor is picking up a sort of blush color in the furniture and maybe a green? So I like the blush colored rugs you chose to show. I'd add some blush to the bedding, maybe a blanket for naps like @Maureen showed. Pick up a dark olive green in one or two pillows. I like the dark olive green in the pictures @Maureen showed also but with wood frames. For the walls, what do you think of a pale blush white like Sherwin Williams Intimate White? I'd look for some small items with rattan or straw. What do you think of this for wall sconces? You didn't mention window treatments.

There is no blush at all. Just a warm medium rub through. We have Roman shades (oatmeal color). Planning to paint the mill work Swiss coffee if that color seems right? Not sure about walls yet.

@Sarah I like Swiss Coffee. Look at the colors they say goes with it. Lush is just a little darker and would leave room for the dark olive I suggested to ground it all. How do you feel about a charcoal/olive/blush color scheme? If you don't like it, let's start again. Paint is the LAST step in the process, not the first. And it's far better to think through every detail before buying anything.

I went to look at and feel rugs the other day. I really do want something soft underfoot. (We still have young children who occasionally make a pallet in our room on movie nights or when they do not feel well.). I like the look of the nubby texture, but may lean more toward a wool braided rug for its softness factor although I am still not sure it would be cozy to lay upon. For now, our floors are a medium would look laminate in our bedrooms.
And, yes, I was looking for a rug first to base any other choices upon. We had our bedroom olive before, but are looking for something more fresh and natural this time—- especially with the dark stain on our furniture. The classic pillow ticking, light wood nightstands, and cozy rug sound amazing. I just did not realize pulling the graphite (dark blue-ish color) toward the black stained wood would be such a challenge.
Part of me still wants to look for a rug that is light, but that can draw in the “navy”/charcoal and rust (of the wood tone) together.

We did find this on Houzz and liked the varying wood tones. Would this be on the right track for light wood night stands?

Ok, so not blush and olive. Gotcha. That's just how it came across on my phone; your furniture looks green to me.You say the furniture has a blue color, then there's the wood, so maybe just go with blue, grey and gold? I still like the paint, but it would be safe to just put a pin in it until you get everything figured out. Are you wanting to go with all neutrals? If not, do you want to bring in blue? In what?

The furniture is stained black. Our bedding ends up being blue/grey pillow ticking. This combo has me stumped.

Maybe take pics of the entire room, so folks can see all of the pieces in one shot. I agree - the furniture is quite heavy and dark.

Are there too many dark pieces in one room?

@Sarah, I second @ shirlpp with a request to see a far away picture of the room with as much of the furniture as you can and with the new bedding on it. Black or very dark grey? Blue-grey or grey with a hint of blue? I am staring to wonder if your best bet is to add creams and caramels….yes,  @Jan Moyer like you said in the first place. :-) If you want to add some excitement, maybe some bright red orange in one of the pillows. That would be a version of the blue/yellow/red triadic color scheme. Or you could stick with blue/orange You seem to have selected your paint and blinds. Jan suggested a carpet, wall sconces and pillows are left?

It will be awhile before I can post room pics. We are in the midst of this process and everything is in disarray.
We get loads of natural light in this room. Honestly, the furniture does not seem dark and heavy. Maybe more casual as Jan mentioned.
Thanks again for all your suggestions. I am taking them to heart while staying true to how we live. My mind is open to trying something new and different.

I think you are not really understanding the bed you bought, and you added two heavy dressers in a match. The "black rub" Isn't a color........not the way you are thinking of it. Think of it as nothing but a dark neutral, but quite rustic and casual in nature.

The ticking quilt need not and should not be the only bedding! Layer the bed! Add a white coverlet and three european shams. Add a lumbar pillow in a deeper blue! Fold the ticking quilt at the foot of the bed, and just use it as an accent!

OR? Use it in another bedroom, and pick something else. It's a quilt and a couple shams, not a marriage to death!

I wouldn't buy a rug online. I'd be prepared to spend some money.

Go to a good broadloom carpet store /local. Someone who carries Antrim. Pick a neutral or pale grayish blue. I still favor a wool and jute for the texture AND because it is soft. But you can make any broadloom into an area rug/bound . serged, hand bound etc. To the inch.

Unless you want a tomb? Lighten up the side tables, the rug, add white to that bed with and no matter whatever color is on that bed.

Look below, at how any dark bed is dressed. You can't just plop a quilt on there like grand ma and expect a miracle. that's because the bed, ANY bed is the elephant in the room

Hi, Sarah … what colors and styles do you like? What kind of mood are you wanting in there?

Everything you have can easily be worked with, and you don’t have to put neutrals with it unless that’s the look you want. In fact, I’d bring in colors, especially in a rug …. but again, I don’t know your style.

I have a black bed in my guest room with a dark stained (rustic) Mexican pine nightstand, very similar to your furniture. It’s a smaller room than yours, gets lots of natural light, and the black is not a light suck at all. The walls are khaki and I have a colorful Kilim style rug. I change bedding with the seasons.

When you’re able, do show more of the room, it’ll really help. :)

@Jan Moyer ... About "making the bed like Grandma"...I realize that's me and would like to be schooled. Is there an article or post about the modern way of dressing the bed? A how-to? What are the pieces and their functions? I get sheets. I understand a blanket, though am not sure there are blankets anymore. I get a bed spread, but those don't seem the same. A "why the change" and "how do you do that every day" would be nice to. :-) I like the new way, but it looks hard. Can one person do it? Or maybe it's my grandma bedding that makes it hard?

@ Jilly, Thank you ever so much for this perspective. Your bedroom is much more what I was looking for when searching for a colorful rug. I have loved Jan’s mood board and have been searching for ways to fulfill it, but if I am being truthful, it just does not feel like me. It is beautiful, but would feel like I was in someone else’s room or on a vacation. I do like a more old world style, but I hear her as she describes things as younger and fresher. I am learning so much (even about myself).
I am excited to add in the natural wood color for bedside tables and am still looking for lamps/pendants or sconces to install bedside as well as pillows. I am dreaming of traditional cobalt/ black patterns for pillows because I love toile in small doses. But I am so unsure of whether this will have the softening effect I want on the heavy lined masculine furniture we have had for years and love.

@ Jan Moyer, I am curious about the LoLoi rug you posted. Do you have a link for that one? There are so many in their line even when you add powerloomed to the description. I am so grateful for your expertise and being gentle with me as I try to find my way.
