HELP wrapping up this project!

Hi y’all!

I am looking for some help finalizing my living, dining room and kitchen area. Its an open floor plan. I feel like the spaces need some warmth but I am having a hard time finding the right pieces with what I currently have. Just looking for finishing touches not really changing much of what I already have. Overall tying everything together

what else could anyone possibly give you? you have 3 other posts relating to this space.

This one is 130 comments of advice and help

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6244609/accessorizing-open-floor-plan

and this one is 106 comments

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/6295923/organic-modern-warm-minimalist-open-floor-plan

over 200 comments were given. what exactly is it you're missing that wasn't already suggested?

If I remember, you want very minimal decor. which you have. you don't want to paint (I'd say paint the doors or trim) and you don't want excessive wall decor.

What else are you looking for?

your living space came out nice btw

I really like your living space. The only thing I would is to add some potted plants in front of the patio wall, maybe a bench.

I get your desire to be neutral, as evident in your choices. However, I don't care for your choice of stark white art over that traditional-appearing sofa, with the traditional-appearing rug.

Stark white art has a place, of course. It is quite a statement: a statement of blank, anti-art, perhaps used in an extremely contemporary/modern space. For me personally (and yes, art is an individual preference, ofc), it is a statement of wanting things stark, white, clean, modern, and blank. But yet you want to warm things up.

You have much traditional-looking items in this room (cabinets, knobs, rug, sofa, pillows, etc). The art doesn't fit. Warm up the space with color, and start with the art. That's my opinion.

Your living room is perfection. The entire thing. Just stop where you are on that part of the room.

Back half of the room - Will you have stools at the island? It looks naked. A rug under the table would help warm up the space (minimal, nothing with pattern or print.) The area above the sink looks naked and needs a little something.

I don't think the chandelier reads boldly enough on your space but I suspect you don't want to replace that.

I think your curtains look a bit skimpy. Try hanging two on each side (steal ones from the living room to test out in the dining room.)

Yep - that wall art has to go. It's doing nothing for your space.

Change the art and mix in some colored throw pillows I envision with a geometric pattern (black and white/cream?)

Thank you everyone! I think we all agree that the wall art is not working. I was thinking of perhaps repainting in a warmer shade since its the cheapest option.

@kendrah I agree on the stools and rug idea. Im just trying to find the right style of stools to complement the slipcover chairs. Any suggestions?

@celery i love the color scheme on your first rendering perhaps the current wall art in that warm shade would be good? I dont object on the gallery wall i just currently have one on the hallways next to space and dont want to repeat.

Ok, you are really not going to like what I have to say.

That looks like the home of someone that is a government spy.

There is no person in that home, nothing that shows anything individual or personal about the person that lives there.

There is also no warmth, no personality, no humor, no quirkiness, no texture, no nothing.

To wit, the canvases over your sofa are blank!

So either you are a government spy or you are afraid of comitment or you are afraid of making a mistake.

    Please add color, texture, detail.

I am not sure that a mirror in your dining area is a good choice. Is it just reflecting the kitchen cabinets? If so, get rid of it and replace it with art.

You can get some great posters and frame them.

You can get one or two that have some of the blue that is in your island.

I don't know what your taste is so I won't make a suggestion now.

If you are bound and determined to have a mirror, get rid of the one you have and get one with a large and beautiful frame.

Please get some interesting art for over your sofa.

Please get colored and textured throw pillows such as velvet and silk. Get a great throw with pom poms,

Better yet, make one yourself in your colors.

Keep your eyes peeled for a real Persian or Oriental rug in the colorways you like.

That will make your whole room come alive.

If you think you can do that, do that first, and get the other things afterwards to coordinate with that.

Front space has black wall, black tall lamp, black curtain rods, and black fan. I would get bar stools with black iron legs and a warm leather seat the color of your chairs in your living room. It would tie the space together nicely. See the chairs below for color reference. I don't like the chairs but the colors of legs and seat look nice. I don't think they relate to the dining chairs but the contrast there is fine.

I can't believe everyone is hating on the white blank artwok above your sofa. I think it is serene and not boring at all because of how the frames define the space. I'd be so sad to see it go! I need to start a Save Subtle Artwork campaign!

    Good color scheme

The art is as you said subtle and serene. I think the fact that they are literally close to each other you cannot really see the wood framing that offers a nice warm touch. But im okay with repainting to make them pop a little more. Im not 💯 ready to get rid of them so paint can work.

What about stools in a woven or rattan materials? Im not a huge a fan of leather

A blank canvas is subtle artwork?

The Emperoris not wearing any clothing, and your 5 year old can do what Jackson Pollack did.

This is what I had in mind.

Don't just paint the frames. Paint some swirls or something inside the frame.

The canvas already have swirls. They aren’t just blank. They have texture and a swirls. That’s why i was thinking of repainting so the texture and swirls could be more visible. The picture below is an online picture of the canvas

Beautiful room! i think adding some color to those white textured art pieces is a great idea:)

Thank you! I cant decide if i want to do a light or dark shade of beige

    Similar couch etc

Cool! The swirls are way too subtle. Get a large piece of paper from like Walmart or a paint store and play with the colors before committing.

You can go with both colors light, and dark beige. :-))

I like the size of the art but its basically a white canvas and I get that you were going for that look but it just doesn't work in that space. The rug is great but the throw pillows could tie in with the art if you found a nicer piece. Check Pottery Barn or Anthropology.

Thank you for the suggestions! This weekend i will play around with paint colors and post some pics.

I am currently shopping around for the stools. Thank you for the suggestions! Will post pics once i find one that i like. I think i am leaning more for the woven/rattan style to tie the chairs in my living room

I think some woven or rattan pieces would add so much texture, depth and warmth to your space, it will look great! I agree that adding some color to enhance your canvasses would look fantastic!

I was thinking of adding woven or rattan art on the wall over the white canvases. Idk what y’all think about that?

Speaking of white canvases, I made some swatches of colors to repaint

IMO… no rattan over white art.

It’s only paint. Experiment. If you don’t like it repaint white again

Another option, just lightly brush on the lighted of your paint colors to the canvas art. Just catching the edges of the design and see if that gives you the look you want. Neutral with a little color.

I am not a pro, but I think you should go into taupes like your pillows, is that olive or gray in your rug? But I do like the too right to blend in with your chairs on the right.

I was thinking of taupe but the rug already has a lot of the taupes and dark beige colors so im afraid its too matchy matchy. I like the idea of going witj a light shade.
The rug has like a blue grey color its similar to the island color. I was thinking of buying a throw blanket in a similar color to pull more of that color from the rug and tie the island. I am still thinking of repainting the vases probably in a shade lighter than the black on the fireplace to incorporate more black. I feel like the space needs some contrast. I am currently waiting on a black table lamp but I haven’t decided on the color and shape of the end table yet. This will go next to the Olive tree.

The rattan picture is meant to completely remove the art and just use that as wall art instead

Check out the shop Thriftsandwicks on Etsy. They have cool basket displays. On Etsy, search under “shops”

Some updates. I added a black table lamp still looking for a better option for side table. Candle sticks on the fireplace, not sure what to do on the opposite side of tv. And finally charcoal throw blanket. I know in prior posts ppl have been suggesting to tie the island to the space so thats my way but im not loving how it looks.

    Thoughts on this small updates??
I an still on the hunt for the woven stools. Hopefully in the next few days i find something

did not readthrough all the comments but looking at recent picture above: the sectional is hefty and the floor lamp spindly - so a floor lamp with thicker column. the end table is too short so the lamp becomes to short - lamp should be higher than the sofa cushions. Coffee table is lost due to its paleness - charcoal would be better.

The side table is there to just see how the lamp goes with everything else. I still looking for one

I found this side table earlier. Its in a brown color with some black coloring

Hello! Today I thought i move around some things as I get ready to wrap up this space. I’m seriously considering swapping the round mirror and art between both spaces? What’s y’all still think about that and the new updates.

I’m still working on replacing the side table in the living room and adding an extra set of curtain panels. Woven stools, runner and dining room rug coming soon!

IMO - 6 of 1 and a half dozen of the other. Basically, I see that it does not change the look of anything by switching the mirror and artwork.

You need some color in the artwork.

Fireplace is powerful and the art above your sofa is a good complememt to it. Never mind those who say you need artwork with color. They dont appreciate the subtlties of neutrals. The candlesticks seem flimsy and lost there. I’d put a small vertical plant to the left of the tv on the mantle for a pop of color contrast.

My thought on swapping was that currently the dining wall looks pretty empty, and I felt that the wall art will fill more of the space. I think the dining room looks blah compared to the living space.

Thank you Kendrah! For the candlestick holders I am planning on adding candles for more color, but wouldn’t mind changing it if needed

To see if what you want works - do you have any command strips? You can use command strips and put the artwork in the dining room for a visual. Then you will know for sure. Post pics if you do this.

Will do thank you for the suggestion
