can you show the floor plan with stairs, FP, posts and dimensions? Seems like it would be hard to play ping pong with that beam across the middle

I attached the floor plan. Not sure on dimensions tbh. The ping pong table can’t go the other way because according to my hubby who is very serious about ping pong, there’s not enough room to back up when playing seriously.

I think creating zones in the room would be helpful -and then design each zone to fit the activity that you have in mind

If it were me - I would set up a corner for an art space - would lay down an outdoor rug, then have a terrific table/storage and supplies for all sorts of projects - set up cork on the wall so they could have a gallery wall

Friends of ours installed a low climbing wall in their basement and their kids loved it - they just put down a spongy gymnastics mat below (there are ton of DIY videos online)

Depending on ages other ideas could be

train table

ball pit

mini "stage" with curtains and costumes

pretend kitchen and grocery store

a quiet reading corner fort would be high on my list too

When my boys were little - I rotated things in and out of our basement playroom for variety and it helped a lot

I’d add cozy seating at the fireplace with reading lamps.

You have lots of wall space for picture ledges that can be used to display, books, artwork and family photos.

With the ping pong table staying where it is, it will be difficult to design around the room, simply because any change will reduce the room to back up when your husband plays.

Since that is his primary concern, it might be inconvenient to add furniture.

Unless he plays every single day, and if he doesn't mind shifting things around when he does play, you can create zones and push the table to the far end of the room, He can bring it in when he would like to play.

An alternative is to recess the table between two columns, effectively turning it into a partition that can be converted into a table. This will allow you to keep it in the same space, and when it is tucked away; have two distinct zones.

One could be a lounge area with a projector and a screen, and the other could be a play area for your child (assumed you have one based on the small desk and chairs)

It looks like the ping pong table can be moved to a few places. If it is really staying where it is, you'll need to mark out where your husband is saying he needs space to play so that you don't add furniture into the places he is needing open. We also recommend taking hard measurements and posting those as those will allow you to get more help. If anything try adding two chairs in front of the fireplace with an ottoman and maybe placing some bean bags or two other chairs near the column where the ping pong table isn't. If there is space you could look at adding a small game table to play games at and then maybe a small fridge to hold beverages. You also might look at convertible ping pong tables that turn into a place to eat or sit around when not in use if it is going to stay where it is.
