Not sure how old, but it's definitely an old refinishing kit. Should I just throw it out? Not sure what kind of finish is currently on the table, but would like to put something on to protect it for everyday use.

That CAN make more difference than what is used. I said CAN not WILL make a difference because I don't know what is on it now. Everyone loves a mystery but not in their furniture finish. Loose the Formby's and at least use something you can find information on. What's wrong with the finish? Why do you think something must be done before clear coating? Was laminate stained and clear coated? What species of wood is the laminate? Will surface be used hard and abused? I realize you came here looking for a one size fits all silver bullet solution but there is none,otherwise there would be no demand for professional painters and finishers.

Some of the veneer has chipped off and there is also a bubble in the veneer I would like to fix. It is an oak veneer. It won't be abused. I thought the old finish would need to be removed before clear coating since I don't know what type of finish is on it. I appreciate your answer. Would you recommend tung oil? Waterlox? or something else?

A wipe on finish like Watco should do what you need and can be applied and renewed without sanding.

Faux bois??? Thanks HUE Colors, I have done a bit of research online. Used to refinish furniture, years ago, but have never done anything with veneer.
