Seed grown dahlias are very small plants initially, typically under 24". Seeds are open harvested so they could look like anything but one specialty dahlia grower notes this: " Most dahlia seeds result in open center style dahlias, some having poor dahlia qualities, but there is always a chance of finding your favorite. Seedlings will produce a small clump of tubers in the first growing season. "

There is no concern about larger containers until at least the second season but I would stay with at least a 6" or nursery gallon for the first year.

Thank you! Yes, the seed packet I ordered from Floret mentions that it is going to be open centered single or double blooms. I have lost a few of my dinnerplate dahlias due to rains in California so I want to see what the seeds bring to me. I will seed them in slightly bigger pots as soon as this bout of rain gets over.

most babes seedlings prefer to be rootbound.. so yo start with small pots.. and repot your way up as the plant fills the pots with roots..

and that is one trick the pro's use to speed growth ...

i used to use 6oz solo cups.. then 8 oz.. then 16.. up to a one gal....since they are int eh pots shourt term.. you really dont need to throw out the media every pot change ...

another trick with pots.. is when it rains.. lay the pots on their sides.. until the rain stops.. so it doesnt flood the pot and media...
