I prefer the nickel. As for the style, it is up to you. If you swap out the dining chairs to your table to something more transitional or modern the room would still look great. Question is how attached to the design of the chairs are you? I think they kind of dictate what the design of the light fixtures need to be.

The chairs are from family, so they will stay. We are getting new counters (lighter white or gray granite more than likely) and a basic subway type style backsplash.

Install a drop light over the island that will draw the attention away from your microhood and tie in your black countertop contents. Consider matte black with a stainless steel trim. Above the table go with a light that will compliment the kitchen drop light. Pick a light that will be high and tight against the ceiling but will still bring some drama to the area. As for both, I would go with a romantic industrial style.

Neither nickel or bronze. You have no bronze. You have black accents in the room. Any chance you want to scrape off the popcorn ceiling finish?

I would select black and white. The kitchen needs to be refreshed.

oh yes if you are replacing the counters dont start on lighting just yet, and I would also suggest getting rid of the popcorn! and add a few more recessed lights. with your finish choices either option could work, dark might be a nice contrast and stay a bit more traditional since that is what your table and kitchen really are.

As a suggestion,

jazz up the back and side panels of the island, and consider painting it, like shown above,

you may want to put in a few glass doors for the uppers

If you're keeping cabinets and table, definitely bronze (or black or antique brass). Nickel or any other silver-tone metal will not make sense with those warm, earthy colors. I would suggest a hanging shade over the table and two pendants over the island.
