Custom size drawer pulls?

last modified: 3 years ago

We are purchasing a home in which all the kitchen cabinets and drawers have the exact same knob. The wider, deeper drawers have two knobs 15.5" center to center. The false drawer under the sink has 17" between the two knobs. Since we are not remodeling the kitchen, we wanted to get new hardware, but I find all the same knob on every cabinet/drawer to be boring. I love the look of bigger handles for the wide drawers but cannot find any that are 15.5" center to center. Does anyone know of a solution? I'm sure there is a craftsman out there who would make a custom handle, but I thought I'd ask on this forum in case someone knows of this size available somewhere. TYIA!

Also, think about how much effort and headache you want to put into avoiding "boring"....

In my previous house I had custom hand made, solid bronze cabinet hardware made by Pruskin

    https://www.pruskinhardware.com/

Quite pricey, but beautiful hardware. Fridge pulls in the photo.

Another company you can look at is Rocky Mountain Hardware. I've bought from them for a couple of bathrooms, but not anything custom. Also solid bronze.

I added photos to original post. Sorry, I had to screen shot videos from previous family gatherings. We currently live 2 hours away, so i couldn't zip over to take a still shot. My issue is that the round knobs are 15.5" center to center and that is an odd size for a single pull.

Fill the holes, touch up the paint, and redrill for a standard size handle.

I use Lee Valley for simple stainless pulls they come in many sizes maybe check that out. I have to say I hate 2 knobs or 2 short pulls on large drawers so I would be trying to find something for those for sure .

If you can find the size but not the right color, you can spray paint handles. I repainted the doors of a bathroom vanity but forgot to fill the holds so I was stuck with a tough size. I found a pull that fit (and I liked ) so I sprayed them with metallic brass paint.

Cover with gesso before you spray paint so it lasts longer.

I am unable to find a pull 15.5" center to center and the paint is a very smooth baked on finish that would be very hard to touch up. My father tried in one area on the appliance garage and it's glaringly obvious.

@Jan Moyer - do you have any ideas for this?

Anything is possible…..it all depends on what you’re willing to pay and how far you’re willing to go. Will this be your main home? Vacation home? Rental? When we purchased our current home, we were in a similar situation: every single piece of cabinet hardware IN THE ENTIRE HOUSE was the same….a plain, shiny “graphite” knob….that was it! I did exactly what you are trying to do; I replaced every single knob, and here’s how: we had knobs and pulls from our last kitchen that we had replaced and brought with us, and we replaced all drawer knobs with ours, and cabinet doors got a pull…all we needed was one extra hole. Was it up to today’s standards and styles? No, but it looked 100 times better than the old, plain, boring knobs that came with this house. When we fully remodeled the kitchen last year, we changed it all. I think you’re kind of stuck doing something like we did; a 15” spread is way long for a simple drawer, the paint (as you stated) can’t easily be touched up after a repair, so unless you’re getting all new drawer fronts, your options are limited, unfortunately.
I will post a couple of photos to show what we did; one is of the primary bathroom (pre-remodel listing pic from the sale), but the knobs are exactly the same as the kitchen’s; the second one is of our kitchen, pre-remodel but with our knob/pull changes.

Have you tried Etsy? I am sure there may be an artisan on there. Maybe you can do a design with a leather center that would provide flexibility EDITED- I did a search on Etsy and there are several custom handles- there is a nice one that uses a wood dowel in the center

Find a pull with a faceplate that would cover the existing holes snd drill new holes fir the new handle

Agree with wsea -- Beverly gave one example like that in the very first comment! :)

Do a search on "adjustable drawer pulls extra wide", which will let you deal with varying center-to-center measurements. Most of the ones I found on a quick search were for shorter pulls, but this one from Etsy has longer lengths and various finishes. This one, also Etsy, has long, adjustable pulls. One more.

Agree with @Mary Iverson Get some wood filler to close up the existing holes, sand it down and touch up the paint. And then you can install whatever hardware you want.

I had similar problem. Put cup pulls where the knobs on the drawers were. No one could see former hole. Left knobs on doors. Looks very nice.

I know your OP said you’re not going to renovate. But looking at the photos of the old-style partial overlay cabinetry. If you’re even now saying that the knobs bug you, then there’s going to be plenty else that is going to bug you about this kitchen. Cabinet hardware is expensive, even non-custom, cause you start counting how many you need and you won’t believe once you do the math. I’d do nothing with the knobs, because I think you’re going to end up doing a lot more updating to this kitchen since at this early stage the knobs are bugging you. Just wait.

@chicagoans this is brilliant! Thanks for sharing! I didn't even think of an adjustable handle!

I would use two pulls on the drawers, using the existing hole for one side of each pull and drilling a new hole for the other side of the pull. And pulls on the doors, too, using the existing hole and drilling a new hole for the other end of the pull.

I don't like the adjustable pulls because the end that juts out tends to catch on things like pockets.

🤗by adding another hole on cabinet doors uppers and lowers you can add handles to them than only have knobs on drawers.

You can add any size handles you want on doors.
