Do you need this space to be an office or a bedroom? You'll get better advice if you provide more information about what you're starting with and why you're considering this type of project. Have you already looked into the building codes around doing this type of conversion in your area? I will say it is fundamentally undesirable to have a bathroom open into a kitchen.

Thank you. We are removing our current laundry room to be able to enlarge the kitchen. This leaves us with needing a spot for the laundry. We’ve always wanted another bathroom, so we thought, if we’re already adding plumbing to the garage, why not convert the whole thing? We don’t ”need” another bedroom, but if we have more kids, it could be beneficial. We have a one year old right now. The current house is a 3 bedroom, 1 bath. So this conversion could make it a 4 bedroom 2 bath, which would out us in a higher price bracket when we eventually sell, in ten years or so.

My first thought: sketch #3 looks as though the bathroom is only accessed thru the bedroom, thus private to this bedroom. So, then, this now will be considered a master suite?

If you don’t currently have a bath private to your master bedroom, which assumably you don’t, sketch #3 would be a valuable asset/update your home. I wouldn’t buy a house without a private bath for my master bedroom.

Sketch#3 has the most opportunity - a door for public access to the bath or private for a Master/Guest, expanding/accessing the Laundry into the Kitchen depending whatever is along that wall, not having the water heater tucked back behind a washer/dryer, keeping circulation out of the Dining area. More info about existing and a drawing that is proper representation and scale would be needed to go beyond generalization of a layout.

You do realize this is really building an addition . Since garages are not built to be occupied by humans so need proper foundations and in this case also plumbing and serer hookups pretty much bulding a small house . You might as well get an architect to help make this look less like agarage convesion and more like a nice addition that looks like it has always been there. Satrt by removing any driveway that went to the garge .

Hi Michelle, I stumbled across your post as I am struggling with almost an identical issue and garage dimensions. What did you decide to do?

@Veronica We’re not finished, we ended up parting ways from our contractor due to a lack of quality in their work. We’ve been doing the finishing ourselves as time and money allows. We ended up casing the opening between the dining room and garage- creating a play area and lounge space. We have a full bathroom and laundry room in the back 1/3 of the previous 1 car garage, with a small closet between the two for toy and game storage. (The header delineates what used to be the garage wall in the photos) The previous garage door opening was bricked in and we had a window placed that matched the size of the other exterior windows. My husband still has some electrical work, trim and other things to finish up.
