I just had mine retrofitted yesterday with LED lights. This is how they look. He used bulbs that are adjustable so you can choose how bright you want them to be.

Waht size is that hole and what type oflighting was chosen IMO this looks like a 6" pot which probably the electrician had 100 in his garage and is trying to get rid of them I iike max. 4 " pot lights all LED 4000K What you have looks like regualr bulbs screwed into to 6" cans The brightiness of course is something I need to see to understand IMO a kitchen should have the ability to light up like an operating room sometimes so layers of lighting some ceiling some pendats and some undercabinet. I have no idea what you had before for ,ighting but sometimes when you get a lot more light in a space it does feel too brigt only because it was dark before.

Not sure what kind of bulbs you have, but those don't look like they are appropriate for the fixture. That being said, I find LED lights to be much too glaring and bright; I prefer incandescent or halogen. You need to find out what bulbs are required for your fixtures. And make sure you have all lights on dimmer switches.

That's not the right bulb, that's a temporary bulb I think. Its usually possible to get a bulb that sits higher up in the can or the socket can be adjusted so the bulb sits higher in the can. You can also use dimmable bulbs and put these fixtures on a dimmer.

They will install trims after your ceiling is drywalled and painted. You can minimize glare with Alzak trims and dimmable PAR bulbs.

The bulb looks like an A bulb. That's the kind like you put in a lamp. Usually this sort of fixture is suited to a reflector bulb, which are shaped more like this:

He just stuck in a temporary bulb. No clue why you have a black baffle .....use white. White trim as well. Tell him you want 3000/3500 k led, UNLESS you do love a surgical center for a kitchen. UGH.

No, you usually can't use halogen or incandescent bulbs in any fixture. LED bulbs take a specific fixture.

I had asked our builder to have the electrician show us what he was using for recessed lights. Right before they were supposed to start working they showed us the fixtures ... it was technology from 15 years ago and his supplier probably has a warehouse full of them! We said no way and consulted with the lighting store. Ended up ordering much better recessed lights, but had to wait 4 weeks for delivery and push back the electricians. No way was I building a custom house and putting in 15 year old lighting technology, specially with high ceilings.

It looks like your electricians got the basic/cheap option from his supplier too ...

I'm not recommending the one from HD, as there are a lot of choices.

IMO, the better ones have the higher lumens, a CRI of at least 90, and the selectable color choice.

You have to "select" the color BEFORE they are installed, but you should be able to test a couple side by side, before they are all done. I've seen the colors range all the way from 2700k to 6000K.

@Mary Elizabeth Since these are already up in the ceiling, does that mean the color has been ”selected”?

Or is it the part yet-to-be added (the retrofit kit) where you chopse the color?

@Theresa Mary, the color selection is on the retrofit kit. Hopefully the trim will cover whatever that little side hole is on the ceiling drywall. I think it should, but check the specs to be sure.

ETA: Actually, they should fill and patch that, especially if there are any more of them.
