It's a long story, but I am thinking of replacing this wrought iron handrail with a handrail along the wall, and then filling in the space where it is now with.... something.... I don't know what. I would do a regular wood handrail but the builders didn't leave enough room for that, which I guess is why there is a wrought iron one there. What would look good here? Anything? I thought of spindles just going up, but that would look very 70s (in a bad way, I think). Here are some pictures of the space.
