Reading nook questions

I was recently given a tall vintage bookcase which fits perfectly in a small, odd corner of my small, rectangular living room. I want to create a cozy little reading corner with a big comfy chair and a reading light but the area is still part of the rest of the room. Is it a good idea to match the reading chair to the rest of the room? (it's decorated in classic, modern vintage, chesterfield linen sofa, tufted velvet accent chair, shades of blue, cream and gray). I found a really cozy looking reading chair with great reviews at anthropologie which is a light blush color. It's more mid century modern. I was thinking I could add a blue throw pillow and blanket to try to blend the colors a bit. Would this look odd and out of place?

It’s hard to say without seeing everything, but it sure sounds like it could be a very lovely and charming look! I’m one who loves mixing and matching and think your idea could be pretty, functional, and nicely unexpected. It might give a bit of definition between the areas, too.

“Coordinate” is a better term than “match”. You want the two spaces to feel cohesive but the furniture doesn’t have to be the same. Stay within your color palette and make sure the chair is in proportion to the size of the nook.

Hi, it is hard to imagine a space without images of your existing furniture and color palette but try not to add too many design styles and colors into one space.

The blush reading chair you chose is quite lovely! The blush color will go well with your blues, creams and grays.

Can you try out the chair or is it only available online? I wouldn't find that a comfy chair to sit in for hours reading because it looks like an extremely low back. But, that might not bother you.

If concerned, it comes in grey. I also agree with the above comments.

A rug with the right colors could help connect your room and chair.

Hey everyone! I wasn't sure if I should create a new post or if the original commenters will see the pictures I'm adding. Here are some pictures of my tiny livingroom and the corner I wish to use as a reading nook. My stepmother explained the bookcase they gave to me is not "vintage," apparently it was bought from Ethan Allen about 25 years ago loI! I currently have a navy velvet chair in that space (which is the same chair you see next to my fireplace), but this chair was sent to us by mistake and we were told to just keep it! I'm thinking I will place the bkue chair by the fireplace in place of the gray one that is currently there and then use the gray chair elsewhere. I think this blue chair is just too wide for the small space. It blocks the bookcase drawer and doesn't really allow for a small table. This corner of the living room has always been awkward because our house has a front door that opens right up to the living room. There's no foyer or entryway. When we moved in, we just used this space for my toddler's play tent, play mat and toys. I would really appreciate any advice about what I can do with this space? What size chair would be best in your opinion? (The space between the bookcase and media console is 57in.) What should I do about a rug since our living room rug (8x10) doesn't reach this part of the room? Would you recommend getting a bigger area rug that does cover this space, even if it means it will reach our front door? Or should I have a seperate small rug placed here? I think the blush anthro chair I previously posted about is definitely out as I realize it's much too wide and would look out of place. My husband wants the Irving leather chair from PB. Again, I would really appreciate any advice you might have as I don't really have an eye for decorating!

The pottery barn chair is pretty big. Your room looks narrow. I would put your existing chair in that corner to get an idea of what works.

Get a cardboard box and cut it to the PB chair dimensions -- then you can see how it looks size-wise.

I like the blue chair there. Move it away from the wall and toward the console a bit and you are set. How often are you likely to open the bookcase drawer? I don’t think that you need a table there - just put a coaster on the console or on a book shelf.

Great idea about the cardboard box to give me an idea of how the PB chair might fit. I appreciate your thoughts about the blue chair. It was free, so I guess you can't beat that! 😁 I've been worried it looks too big for the space but it is a cozy chair.

Cozy and used is better than perfectly fitting and magazine-ready but uncomfortable!! :D
