Bathroom Makeover Needed!!

Help! Any suggestions on how to remodel this bathroom “cheaply”? I’m told to just paint the tile and tub. But the entire bathroom is tile 🤢 I just ripped out the pink sliding door (not pictured)

Agree! Turn off HGTV and head on over to retrorenovation.com. embrace it if its still in good shape. it looks like it just needs a good cleaning. it will cost at least $20k to gut into a white or grey generic blah that will date it to 2020, so why not embrace the 50s/ 60s charm? add some color, pattern, texture and shine, and voila, you will grow to love it.

Okay, I am a little shocked to see the response already. I just really have never liked this bathroom. And the one upstairs is all green. Maybe changing the vanity will help??

What a great bath! Love the globes on your light fixture! I would bleach the darkened grout above the tub, buy three matching light bulbs the midle yellow warm light bulb looks wrong next to your bright white bulbs. Buy plush white towels and a white waffle shower curtain and enjoy. Grey towels and shower curtain will also work with pink.

Roarah: I do have all grey accessories. I just pulled them out for the photo. And the shower curtain was just up while the other got washed. I’m just unsure if I’ll ever love it if I haven’t in 12 years.

Your bathroom is spectacular. That is quality work which you will never get nowadays.

I agree. Turn off HGTV which is only around to sell you on the next trend. Your bathroom is timeless. HGTV is not.

Oh, Steph, I feel your pain about hating something for so long. But, I just agree. I love that room and I bet the green one is special too. Maybe just take a bit to look at photos of bathrooms of this era online. Maybe you’ll get to like them once they’re all spiffed up. Personally, I love well kept or well restored vintage anything. Good luck!

I took photos of the bathroom. I’m trying to figure out how to load them. 😅

    Here it is….

I love it too, and that style is on-trend. I would get the grout professionally cleaned and swap out the vanity, counter, faucet and light fixture.

This first pic is from a cool new restaurant here in Austin. Green and pink! So both your current bathrooms are stylish. 😁

I think I just hate that it is allllllll tile. I wish every piece of that bathroom wasn’t tile. Some wall would be great. And there’s zero storage.

The lack of storage is a pain, definitely. It looks like your current vanity has a place to sit and do makeup? If you get a new one that is all cabinets and drawers, that would give you additional storage. And I think you could also do a couple of shelves above the toilet.

i love brass fixtures in pink baths I also like light tone or dark wood vanities rather than white. Plants too. pink tile is very on trend right now!

I have never seen so much tile…. I thinks it’s actually very cool. I’m sorry I have nothing else to add. Good luck!

I figured with the response everyone would enjoy the original door.

Ha ha, I think the door was ok to go!

Clean and seal the grout and keep it all. Save yourself $50k and have better workmanship than you would be likely to find today.

People hate these because design media keeps telling them they are supposed to hate them.

Wow. That is a lot! Do you think there is mold on the far wall near the ceiling? If it’s fine structurally and health wise, I would replace the vanity with a white one and white counter. If you can use the sink, do. It ties the pink in. I would get new fixtures and I would stick with chrome. A nice waffle white shower curtain, some fluffy towels and a piece of art somewhere will make a big difference.

It is a lot! But no, I don’t believe it’s mold. It just needs some good elbow grease which I plan to get to this week. I know this bathroom seems I’m not a clean person. But I’m very much a person where I like to make it seem like nobody lives there.

Sorry, but I agree with you Steph. Way too much pink tile. And it’s almost like a pepto bismol pink.

To do on a budget I would see if all the tile could be removed in the main area keeping the tile in the shower. It looks like a straight line down to bathtub.

I would sheetrock it. Maybe wallpaper?

    I would change the vanity.

I have seen tiles painted white which makes sense as grout can be white in a restored hotel in Pittsburgh. While not optimal, it looked clean and neat.

eld6161: Yes! Thank you!! I was starting to think I was crazy. That was my original thought keeping only the shower tiled and adding “wall” to the rest. But it’s very overwhelming to me. The pepto color is a perfect way to describe it.

I’ve lived with a pink tiled bath tub surround for 12 years hating it until this past year when I decided to embrace it. I collected vintage embroidered hankies and made a curtain. I have a white pedestal sink and new white storage cabinets with pink and gold knobs and hung an original watercolor painting I did myself. White and gray striped shower curtain. I’d clean the grout and change the vanity. I don’t have as much tile as you but at this point it’s considered cool to have a vintage bathroom like that, there aren’t many left! Depends how much money you have to spend on it, but I think it might take a lot to gut the bathroom.

The green and peach bathroom is spectacular, not as intense, and in much better condition.

I think if you took down or covered the pink tile ceiling with drywall painted white, it would go a long way to making that bathroom less intense. But I still encourage you to leave all the rest.

The vanity could be sanded and restained or painted white. I would not replace that either.

I love vintage tile, but honestly, the treatment on the ceiling is totally overwhelming. I would consult with some tile experts to see if they could just remove the tile on the ceiling and patch it up, and restore the grout on the remaining wall and floor tile. I'd also replace the vanity top, as it's way too busy for the space. The other challenge in the first bath is that all of your fixtures are different colors - having a pink tub, a white toilet and a cream/yellow sink is too chaotic. I'd hate to get rid of the sink, but maybe going for an all white counter and sink would simplify things. The green fixtures are awesome, though - I'd just source a matching toilet seat.
