On the left, you need one or more planters that fit the scale of the space. The ones you have there are too small. On the right, the space is small for a tree. I'd go with a large shrub, instead.

Here are some ideas for the planters:

You don't have room for a tree to the right of the steps and a large shrub is going to block your lower window. A short, wide shrub might work, or possibly, just a ground cover of some kind. Perhaps you could have one large planter on the left with a dwarf weeping tree in it ? I don't know your climate, or what you may be able to grow.

I agree with suggestions of larger planter(s) on left of stairs. For year round interest I’d look for a blue to match house. If you want height there get a really large pot & maybe a very small Japanese Maple. The other side - inside corner — yes, do consider light & view from inside out that window. Maybe a talll skinny evergreen easy to keep no higher than porch railing. A Fastigate (narrow growth) Yew or Pencil Holly (not holly sharp leafed). Then plant grasses or daylilies for a ground cover. Don’t know where you are but see that you do have seasons from your other posts.

How deep is that bed on the right, front to back. It looks very shallow.

It’s pretty deep, we used to have a wheeping Cherry there before we re did the whole front area. The window to the right is the garage so I’m not too worried about light. We are in NY so we definitely have seasons.
