In my experience, the solid made to measure table pads are better. They are more protective of the surface and they are also neater as you don't have a double layer of fabric to deal with.

I have experience with both - I grew up with the solid type of pads and also used them when I inherited the family dining room table. At a later time I used the quilted table type of pad because it was a temporary situation where I wanted the table protected but didn't want to invest in a permanent solution.

Even if you don't want to use the solid pads all the time, they fold up and are easy to store in a closet.

I recently had my 40 year old solid oak oval table and 4 oak chairs refinished; same stain color. I toyed with the idea of getting a custom pad. Then, I purchased Pimpernel cork backed placemats and coasters. I also made table runners. They allow the beauty of the wood to show! They wipe clean, and are heat resistant.
