Beige overload! SOS!

We just recently bought a house on a mountain with beautiful views in a very cool mountain-vibe/country-chic area. While we love a lot about the house it leaves a lot to be desired as far as curb appeal. Everything is beige and hard-scaped with a few generic flowering bushes. What would you do to update it and make it a little less contemporary/generic??

Your house looks nice - start with a good landscaping plan. It will do wonders for improving the curb appeal!

Of course, paint the trim, garage door and front door something besides beige! Add dramatic (larger) lamps by the garage door and large, dramatic street numbers there, as well. The plantings look fine to me for this time of year. Nice house! Lucky you!

I have no problem with the colors of the house. It isn't an architecturally interesting home (no offense) and as such, there isn't much reason to highlight with color or bring attention to any of the features. I think the colors used and the placement of them are spot on and match well with the roof. I might consider a wood garage door and some more notable lights on either side.

Yes, you could absolutely use some landscaping design. Much depends on budget, how much of the lawn you want to plant on, and your climate. What part of the country are you in? Do neighboring homes have any good examples that you like?

I would look to replace the grass with low growing ground covers..giving more texture and less upkeep….usually a drip system will handle the type of watering needed…lay out the ground covers in interesting shapes rather than rows or squares..and carve out a water run-off paths for directing excess water…to lower areas in the plantings…a little work in the beginning but very little maintenance in the future…

    I would paint it.

I think the siding color looks nice with the brick. Maybe you’d like a lighter, creamier color for the trim? That might make it appear more traditional/cottagey.

Maybe the problem is a lack of contrast between the siding, and the trim and door. For example, while the siding on this house is gray, the house looks better because of the contrast between the siding and the bright trim. In contrast this house used dark trim plus black entry door and garage doors for contrast. Maybe you could leave the siding as is and just improve the look by painting such areas.

Note that the vertical siding in the first linked photo is a lighter color than the horizontal siding. That's something you could do too and still avoid repainting the majority of the house.

Google…modern/country homes…lots of interesting ideas to make you home more distinctive

I really like the first example from wdccruise.

This might might be another option with Sherwin Wms. Repose Gray (siding), Dorian Gray (door/shutters) and white trim. Both of the grays are warm. You don’t have shutters but could use the two grays for the horizontal and vertical siding.

changing the front door..columns..garage door …to a more “country” look in natural wood …would go a long way to re-set the vibe of the home..even terracing the front yard with long 6x6 wood steps would work
