Name this tree?

Can anyone tell me what kind of tree this is. It was given to me by my neighbor so I am trying to figure out where I can plant it.

It's a pine, probably Pinus densiflora 'Oculus draconis', aka dragon's eye pine.

    Full sun and good drainage.

Thank you guys!! it’s already been planted!! I’ll send a picture to make sure we didn’t plant it too close to our home. I don’t think we did.

    Where we planted

I see four potential problems with where you planted it. It looks like it is about 12 to 15 feet from the Electrical box. This should not be a problem, IF it is not over the underground electrical cable.

The other three depend on what they are. I have no idea what the green box is next to the driveway. Is it your electrical box that comes off of the Large Electrical box?

The second is the green pipe closest to the tree with the white cap. If it part of the main sewer line or the line that connects you house to the sewer. Again if it is a sewer line where does it go relative to the tree.

Lastly what are the multiple white pipes on the left side of the picture. Same questions as above. Is it your City shut off valve for the supply water supply line to your house.

While some may respond that there is no problem if the lines are pvc, or other "plastic" type of material, there will be a problem IF they need service that area may have to be dug up a lot.

Okay thank you, maybe we should plant it on the other side then. Or closer to the road. I just really wanted it to hide the big ugly electrical box.

Maybe some large shallow root plants, like azaleas, dwarf lilacs, etc. Exactly what depends on where you live.

It looks like the tree would be a good addition to your landscape, planted in the right place.

plant it straight and upright next time.. use the corner of the house as a guide.. houses are ALWAYS plumb ...

call miss dig.. and have them mark all of your utilities.. and take pix with your phone.. so you dont kill yourself digging ...

Do you guys think if I planted it closer to the road I would be fine? Further away from the box? Probably 30 feet from all utilities and the tree was planted straight, there is a slight bend to it, so it doesn’t stand straight up. So it looks like it’s falling over

I completely disagree it's going to be a problem. Utilities having to be dug up is incredibly unlikely, even if it happens, the tree will probably be fine.

    Thank you!

DG, you have something similar to the ones in my crab shack post. One big difference, your tree has been horribly mistreated. I've seen 'Charlie Brown' trees that look better than that. The ones in my crab shack post have been long since removed due to some kind of needle blight. Update us in a few months and let us know how your pine is doing.

" houses are ALWAYS plumb .. " mmm. Maybe you haven't lived in an old house yet. The curtain pole is plumb. The house is not.

@sam_md yes, it is similar, maybe the same tree? It was given to me by my neighbor so we are trying to save it.

I work for a civil engineering company. I would recommend moving it away from the electrical box for your safety. do not move closer to the road, the local road commission and or city will have jurisdiction of whats with-in the road right-of-way and they can remove the tree if they feel its a hazard. Also, i believe that capped pipe is your well, perhaps not the best location for a tree and its roots.

@brian poultney thanks brian, we have city water and sewage? Would that still mean its a well? I already called 811 (dig) and they came out and marked where the utulity lines are, and the lines are all behind the box. I can move the tree, just would prefer to keep it there, but if its a hazard i will definitely move it.

no - if you have city water, then you are fine. to me, that pipe looked like a well cap. if the lines are behind the box, leave well enough alone. take pics as mentioned so you know the locations of the lines for future reference.
