Lighting is so personal it is hard to pick for someone else. Here is a sconce that would look lovely in your space, go with but not matchy match kitchen and gives a nod to the 1920's.

What a beautiful fireplace. I would leave the originial sconces (charm and character) since they visually complete the fireplace wall (sconces, mantel and FP design). Instead focus on the decor in this area. Perhaps prop a piece of art, a low light plant and one other properly sized item on the mantel. Tools and plant on the hearth. Lighting does not need to match room to room, not even loosely. Just don't forget the origin of the house when making design decisions.

I would paint the walls white prior to changing the sconces.

ivory palace behr is a beautiful colour for the walls and fond a rug with some cream and brown and gold or green to unite the wood and you might even like the sconces better

Sconces there, are not going to give you more room light, the fixtures you have can take a 60 watt bulb, two of those would be over 100 watts of light for example. but alas that is decorative lighting. add a touchier lamp to the right side of the sofa, and another lamp over by the wood cabinet behind the seating. perhaps even add a picture light over the art. If I was going to change these, i would go to a double sconce.

Sorry for the delayed response! We had a big couple of days with our little one. But thank you so much for all the suggestions and responses... @Rawketgrl - that is a really beautiful option for sconces. i really like the color of the brass also. thank you! @BeverlyFLADeziner - thank you for the suggestions. Yes we are going to go with Behr Ostrich paint! i will check out ivory palace as well @Cate (do you know the ostrich color as well?) we have it in our upstairs and its a lovely tone.

@Lyn Nielson - yes i agree that the rug is an awkward size... i always feel a bit nervous buying a rug online! how to know if its a really good quality? if anyone has suggestions let me know! I need to figure out the right size as well.. The red rug is 6x8.5
