How would you handle this?

My overwinter success of new hosta was abysmal. Without going through the whole saga, I'll cut to the chase. This is what I have and can't decide how to handle it.



This is Empress Wu (which was a mistaken shipment). The gallon jug is a reference for size. I thought she was dead, so I dumped the pot. There was nothing in the top four inches of the pot, except roots. So that was a logical assumption that it was dead. A couple of days later I saw some tiny green leaves, so I picked up the root ball and stuck it in a nearby pot. I looked at it yesterday and this is what I found.

I'm fairly sure I potted it at the level it appeared to be growing at the grower.

Do I just cut off all those roots above the level that appears to be correct?

I've never encountered this before -- advice?

    I'm not sure I am understanding what the problem is. I would take the hose and spray some of the soil off from the top so I could see what the planting depth of the hosta should be. But I would do that only if outdoor temperatures are decent. Otherwise you could put it in a pail of lukewarm water to remove some of the media.
