My David Austin Rose is Delayed in Shipping!

I was concerned because my Bathsheba rose got delayed in shipping twice…Once in St.Paul for 24 hours and now for 2 days because of a storm. So I went to their website and this is what I found. This is a direct copy and paste from DAR…

Q: What should I do if I’ve received my bare root roses but I’m not ready to plant?

A: If less than 3 weeks delay…

Store in a frost-free, cool place such as your garden shed or garage. Bare root plants will keep for up to three weeks tightly sealed in the box and polythene bag without a problem. You may see new growth, particularly for orders delivered in March or later - this is a good sign.

If more than 3 weeks delay…

If you are expecting a longer delay before planting it is worth considering heeling-in your plants. To do this, simply remove your plants from their box and polythene bag, leave in their bundle tied together and dig a hole large enough to take the roots of your plant. Replace the soil to cover the roots. Water if conditions are going to be dry

I was pretty shocked at this information. Guess I’ll put my worry hat away for at least 3 weeks. I’m sure it will be here by then.

I believe the info posted from the DA website is what to do when you receive your roses but, even though you have them - YOU are not ready to plant. That's not the same thing as when the rose is delayed in shipping - and hasn't even got to you yet.

The bare roots are pretty hardy... just make sure that you get it into water immediately when it's finally delivered. It will be very thirsty. Good luck!

They will be fine. They come with some moisture in their tightly packed bundles and they aren’t very actively growing yet. Good luck with your roses.

Thanks for the encouraging words all of you! As soon as Bathsheba arrives, which will probably be Tuesday, I will soak for 24 hours and plant. The hole is already dug. I am eager this year. :) My husband says I am still that little girl that used to wait at the mailbox at the farm for my packages to arrive from the Sears catalog. He’s not far off from the truth. Even at 72, that doesn’t go away, I guess.

My Bathsheba arrived today. It has sprouts on the canes with 2 new basils starting from the base and new white hairs coming off of the roots. The canes are small, but the roots are long and I am very happy with my purchase. Into the soaking pot she went and tomorrow, into the dirt she will go!!! I love this time of year!!!!
