I prefer mulch

I always prefer undyed mulch. Looks more natural and does the job of insulating the roots and maintains moisture. Skip red or black or brown dyed mulches though find undyed in the tone you prefer.

Definitely mulch, then plant a low growing groundcover so the mulch no longer has to be replenished.

Good point, Mary. If the poster lives in Arizona, rocks might be appropriate. But 99.9% of the time, mulch wins.

That's what I was thinking Littlebug. Rock mulch only for xeric regions, or maybe Japanese/Zen-style gardens if a person is up for the maintenance.

Mulch, by far. I bought a house where the prior owners used (very sharp) rocks and words fail to describe how much I hated those blasted things.

Weeding was a special kind of torture.

As other said, since rocks are heavier they sink down into the earth. Getting those things out and getting them replaced with mulch was not fun either, and it is years later and every time we put something new in the ground we pull up shovels full of rocks.

Mulch is much easier to work with especially if you ever want to change out or add plants. If you use rocks those will have to be removed in order to change out plants.

you dont mention if sun hits the wall and or walkway... nor where you are ...

if it does.. and you add stone to the bed.. you will BAKE and most likely kill most anything you plant in the bed...

stone and brick retain heat long into the night.. reducing the night time recovery period that most plants need ...

i bet if you walked out there at 2 am barefoot .. the brick and walk would still be warm.. if its in sun ...

dyi stone is a nightmare to wheelbarrow in.. and a worse nightmare to remove ... you may as well move at that point..

and understand.. most weed seed is air borne.. and exactly one minute after you put it down.. weeds wills tart invading.. and it will be even worse is you put fabric below.. and the weeds get their roots into it...

mulch will reduce accumulated heat.. just do mulch

ps: winter time heat accumulation can be even worse.. depending on where you are ... plants need to go dormant..and stay dormant..not thaw out every other nice day ... but again. i dont know where you are .. so it might not be an issue ...
