I am down by the Cape, and of course we too had the terrible drought last summer, but my forsythia bloomed normally this year.

I'm in Maine. Everywhere, I see forsythia in bloom, but not mine. I brought some branches in to force last month and all I got was leaves.

Here in southwestern CT, my forsythia bloomed, but I did notice that mine and the forsythia all over the neighborhood didn't bloom as abundantly and exuberantly as usual. I wonder if it was the temperature fluctuations? I had some bulbs - tulips in particular - that grew rapidly in the early warmth, then when we had a week of near-zero temps they just died. They literally froze in place (lol there are still some out there, unopened buds all grey and leaf-tips brown). I wonder if the cold temps zapped some of the forsythia buds? Did you guys farther north get those wild temperature swings earlier?

I recently realized that my four Korean azaleas (Rhododendron mucronulatum 'Cornell Pink') didn't bloom either. This odd occurrence is the talk of the town where I live.

I am noticing something wrong with my Japanese Maple. Have had it for 20 years and it's 25ft tall and this is the first year, the leafing out seems very sparse. I wonder if it could have been damaged by cold? I don't understand it because how could last winter have been the worst winter here in 20 years? Doesn't make sense. I can wait a couple more weeks to decide if something is wrong with it or not.

Not a single forthysia bloomed and we have an ancient hedge of it as well as a few newer ones. I don't recall this happening in the 25 years we've lived here.

Thanks for that. Interesting. Frankly, I don't even remember a cold snap in February as it's always cold in February! And forsythia and Korean rhododendrons don't bloom in February where I live. But Dave Epstein is very knowledgeable and worth listening to. Thanks again.
