my guess it that the shoots developed when in storage and that looks upside down. Is there a side all roots point to?

That goes into the ground. perhaps you bend at least some shoots upwards and pull the rest.

Planting depth: they tend to have some kind of crown that should be above ground. And perhapy rather mulch with gritt or sand instead of bark.

Sedum are maybe the easiest things to plant. You don't even have to have a piece of root. The leaves root easily without the need for much water. You can devide those plants up to get a nice carpet of them rather quickly. I sometimes collect and pocket the many small Sedum bits that break off and fall to the foor in garden centers. They would just be swept and disposed of anyway. A new trick I've learned is to take pieces of Sedum and place them on scrached soil. Then I mound a tiny bit of soil around the cut part of the Sedum and I place a small stone over the part of the Sedum with the cut. The stone protects the cutting from drying out and allows it enough time to root. Sedum is very good at righting it's position if it's not planted perfectly oriented. Just make sure to cover the roots with soil and use any broken off bits as cuttings for more plants.

Yep, I was about to say you could simply fling them at the ground and toss s spade of soil over them. These are not temperamental or demanding plants.

in fact.. the more thought and care you put into planting them.. the higher the odds you screw it up.. lol ..

is been forever since i broke apart an autumn joy... but i dont recall anything like this.. im wondering where all the baby cabbage sprouts are ... but then.. i dont recall trying to propagate by root cuttings.. it was more crown division...

ps: funny aside... great MI peat soil.. with fert thrown around... because my babies needed feeding.. who knew back then.. and lots of water... ever year.. the plants grew HUGE!!!! .. and flopped by august or so... really defeated the look and purpose.. anyway.. decided not to waste food.. fert. nor water on them.. and they started growing to specs.. perfect size.. never flopped.. etc.. then moved out here to pure sand.. and they loved that also.. and after the first season after transplant.. they only got water that God sent.. and a few are still doing just fine... some failed.. because they ended up in shade... they are full blinding sun plants ..
