Support beam inquiry - something thin and flat?

Attached is a photo of the underside of the front entry shed roof. We removed the drop ceiling and plan to replace it with beadboard that will lay flat against the beams that run left to right in the attached picture (the shorter support beams that are directly against the roof), to maximize the space between the top of the front door and the ceiling of the shed roof.

The 2x4 marked as 2 can be removed without issue. The 2x4s marked as 1 we would like to replace with something thin and flat/low profile (maybe metal?) that could be attached to the underside of the shed roof and take up little or no space. The idea is that it would add support but not get in the way of installing the beadboard basically directly against the underside of the shed roof. Does anyone know of something that could accomplish that?

Nothing on the flat will add support, even steel.

Thank you. I will keep brainstorming…. Just want a nice, flat ceiling of beadboard under the shed roof, to maximize the height above the doors, without having to box out those 2x4s.

Could we inset the 2x4s marked as 1 into the shorter beam that are directly against the underside of the roof as a way to raise the 2x4s marked as 1?

The roof structure is unclear. But it appears those were added as a nailing surface for a soffit, and not as support. You would need to add more pictures of the roof framing, and direction of the gable, to verify.

Thank you very much. These photos show the post placement better. It’s currently a 3.5” square post that we plan to replace with an 8” square post. I’ll need to do some measuring, but placing the post to support the rafters may work.

There appears to be a front beam behind the horizontal facia trim supported by a beam from the house to the far end of the front beam beam that is supported by the post. If so, tell us what it is.

Of course you could always add a deeper beam at the front edge of the roof. If it's left as it is, an 8x8 post might look odd.

Are you doing this yourself? A competent carpenter should be able to solve the problem.

The loading is important so it would help to know the location.

    Holly:

It appears that you could move your header (#1) all the way to the facia and use framing connectors to hold the rafter tails.

And don't forget the handrail your porch needs please.

    Thank you for weighing in!😊

The best way to solve the problem is to measure everything carefully and draw a section detail to scale.

Then, if we knew the climate, we could tell you what to do.

I would love to provide the information you indicate would be helpful to know. Would you be able to tell me what exactly section detail you mean?
