I suppose everyone knows this, but myhostas.be lists "all" the sports and progeny of each hosta. I just looked at Halcyon and it must have 40 or 50 progeny and probably 30 sports (I didn't count each list). I think it's fun to use that site. It's as informative as the hosta library.

Good looking family, I was looking which ones were sports or progeny origins. Looks like some are 3rd & 4th generation. Curious if sports or progeny are more likely to revert back to the parents?

Sports can and do revert, progeny cannot since there's genetic material involved from another cultivar.

I'll give you 2 examples from my own yard. The first is 'Revolution', it is quite unstable and regularly throws all-green sports. Those are sports rather than reversions, the ones occurring for me I refer to with the garden name "Green Revolution" and it's quite a nice plant in its own right. It's vigorous and has an impressive presence.

The other one for me is 'Touch of Class', which of course is in the Halcyon tree. It's been sporting solid-coloured sports which do rather look like 'Halcyon' but are not because they are polyploid and H of course is a simple diploid. This sport is known as 'Touch of Frost'.

To make matters more murky, I have an 'Ice Age Trail' for probably around 10 years or more and it is a streaker of course. And streakers are inherently unstable. It's out of 'Big Daddy' and it regularly has solid-coloured shoots, which of course are reversions to BD. About 4 or 5 years ago I had a shoot that was medio-variegated and rather than removing it that first year I left it in place and sure enough the next year there were 2 variegated shoots. Great! Separated those and they grew to a nice size. The following year I was looking forward again to see how well they'd grown and for love nor money I couldn't find the pot with that variegated plant anywhere. Near as I can figure it had reverted back to BD and was no more....

Time for a family picture update.

A did a slight bit of re-arranging. I was rather taken with the similarity in colours in the top left and those being l-r 'Sleeping Beauty', 'Remember me' and 'Touch of Class' in particular. It's also darn near impossible to tell the difference between 'Bulletproof' on the left and 'Touch of Frost' just to the right of it and while from this angle it would appear as if there's a slight difference in leaf shape with the lower one of the two, the one just above it has a leaf shape that's very, very similar to BP. This is BP's 3rd year in our yard and it's just gangbusters for growth.
