First blooms in my garden

Finally finally we have spring in Southern California! Thought I would share some photos with all you rose people. This is my second spring in our new-to-us house but the first with brand new raised garden beds, improved soil (and no palm tree roots!!!), and I have been impatient to see blooms. It has taken an incredible amount of work to get the beds in shape for planting, and I am EXCITED!!

thanks everyone! I hope Houzz lets me post a response finally as I have been trying to a few days!

Let's see... thank you @BenT (NorCal 9B Sunset 14) for the kind words. I have several "oldies but goodies" I've hung onto since the Vintage Garden days or that I have acquired from rare rose sales.

@librarian_gardner_8b_pnw I absolutely adore that photo of your tulips! So very beautiful. Purple in the garden is so soothing. And are those orange daffodils in the background?? thank you for sharing!

@susan9santabarbara yes! I bought Smokey in 2007 or so, from Vintage Gardens also. Interesting in that I bought one plant of it, and over the years after moving it around the garden, now have 3 bushes of it as the plant seems to easily pop up from where it once lived! Perhaps I can send you a cutting?

@Ang NC_7B and @Melissa Northern Italy zone 8 @roseseek thank you so much! Yes, I also talk about plants a lot to my family. =) My youngest son is still young enough that he decided to become a member of the rose society I belong to (maybe initially because of the nice members and the provided treats at the meeting haha) but now he is becoming quite knowledgeable about classes of roses, garden pests, rose breeders, and so on. Of course, after reading this forum for so long, I have learned a ton from all of you.

@Lala Idaho Zone 7a honestly, I'm not sure which is my favorite now, as in this new garden I have some new beauties I'm observing, but I would have to say Mrs Sam McGredy will always be near the top. Constantly blooming, tough as nails, and that color!

@Dave5bWY you're welcome! I actually asked my oldest son for Deuil du Dr Raynaud a few years ago based on yours and others' positive comments on it. It has only been in the ground five months, but so far is doing well, with three long canes and about 10 buds along each.

@mmmm12COzone5 great point! I see I was going for the mega drama in all my very close up pics! =) Your and everyone's kind comments have inspired me to post a thread about our challenges to getting our new house a working garden. I'll post some long shots of the beds and the bushes as well. Interested to hear others' experiences.

Gorgeous! We're still more than month away from roses. a maybe longer. Everything this spring has been 3-4 weeks behind. We're just getting tulips..and my cherry tree is thinking about blooming.

Kathy, I had Smoky for many years and loved it, but I lost it several years ago. Where did you get yours? Mine was from Vintage way back in the day.

They are so beautiful, Kathy! I especially love that Stile 800, I'm a sucker for blousy blooms. My first blooms are emerging too here in central NC and I walk around the garden constantly watching the action. It's the most exciting time of the year! I'm sure my family is exhausted from my flower talk!

Really beautiful blooms, Kathy! I haven’t been formuate enough to get Stile 800 yet and hope to be able to replace Deuil du Dr Raynaud soon - a favorite. I appreciate you sharing these.

Kathy, thanks for the offer of a cutting of Smoky! When I trade, I do rooted plants, so if ever you're interested in pursuing it, let me know. I have a fair number of rare roses. I'd put my email here, but just want to make sure you actually want it, because I'd delete it after you wrote it down :-D
