I finally found a tree that I put a lot of effort into finding. I called around 50 places in within an hour and a half drove of me. I did find one one that had one balled and burlapped for 500$ dollars. A local tree grower informed me that’s where rich people buy there plants lol. I did a deep dive on nyssas and found a good article from a tree magazine and a write up by a grower. Both pieces mentioned this being their favorite for its form and fall color. This tree was off to the side by itself. It was not a tree I would have usually bought being so big in such a small container. Obviously had some root issues going on. This tree is known for its tap root. It didn’t have much room to grow. Also looks like the central leader broke and regrew at some point. It’s form makes it hard to tell if it’s trying to form a second leader since right now all the branches are growing somewhat straight up. I’ll figure that out as the tree settles in a bit and branches get better form. Also managed to snag another tree I searched high and low for the Appalachian redbud. Conestoga nurseries in Lancaster was the place that had these trees no one else did in the area. Great prices and great trees! Awesome selection and I had been bugging the guy about the afterburner nyssa because in this condition I don’t think it would has been for sale in the nursery.

    Hhhmmm...I somehow missed this thread. Agree with Ben. If you didn't do a lot of trimming of those knotted roots, there's a good chance it will fail eventually, even if it seemed to grew well in the first couple years. This happened to me with a Fagus 'Rotundifolia' I drove all the way to upstate NY to purchase early in the history of my garden around 2007. It lingered for almost 10 years. When it finally died, I dug it up and the root mass was like a solid bowling ball.


    And, no nursery should ever let a containerized plant get that way, but, alas, it happens. Frequently. These days, I won't plant anything, no matter the provenance, without fully examining the root system.
