Kitchen counter and flooring question

My house is a 1926 Dutch Colonial with red oak floors throughout. I have selected two pieces of quartzite for my counters and want to run it up the backsplash.

What do I do about the microwave over the stove?
Should I raise the desk area?
Any suggestions for flooring? I plan to repaint the walls

1. I would replace it with a vented hood because I am too short to use a microwave that high (and they usually don't vent that well).

2. This is personal and only your family can say what's right. It's not really trendy right now but many people like the desks for some tasks. I like a short area for rolling dough or sitting while doing long food prep tasks. Your counter will look slightly more fabulous if it is all one height, though!

3. I'd want the same oak flooring as the rest of the house, but it might end up too oaky if the cabinets stay the same. What stain is on the old floors? If dark, it might be fine. A tile or stone might be nice in there. Is there natural light in there? How close are other rooms? Is it an open plan? Basically, need more info!!

Eliminate the desk area and recapture that counter space

Get the toaster oven off the counter in the space above where the desk used to be

You could select a low profile OTR microwave

or you could install a slide out exhaust hood over the range.

Thank you for the suggestions. The flooring in the rest of the house is a honey color like the cabinets. The floor is too uneven to put tile down. The house is not an open floor plan. There is a lot of natural light in the kitchen.

It might be ideal to replace the microwave with a hood vent and to do the same flooring as the cabinets if you can't do tile. The desk aspect seems as if it would be personal preference. Here are some recent kitchen designs that might help you more:

Install the wall outlets horizontally and lower to the countertop. Switch out the outlet plates to something that blends with quartzite that you bought (I assume that it is a white color). I would raise the desk area. I would not tile behind the microwave but would tile straight across. Crossville has some interesting tiles
