does a TV need to go in this room? because it's easier to place next to the fireplace if it's not centered...

Yes, I am planning on putting a TV in the room. I was considering a fireplace with a low mantle and having it over the fireplace.

Is this a new build? i’d think about your furniture placement - you’ll need to leave the walkway open so center on the wall if you want tv over fireplace.

Respectfully, I’d much rather see the tv to the side of the fireplace, not the main attraction. So I vote for the uncentered version, with some great art over the mantle. Plus, then you have all the freedom to get the tv the right height and protect yourself from neck pain :)

It’s not a new build, but it’s a major remodel of the whole house, and many of the walls and doorways are changing.

Furniture is definitely a consideration with the fireplace. I added some furnishing ideas into the floor plan for a better idea.

I believe there would still be about 3’ of walkway at the narrowest point, but I’m unsure if that will feel too cramped.

You may want to experiment with the TV height and the distance of the TV from the sofa. If you put it over the fireplace it will most likely be higher than usual, and if your sofa is too close you will be uncomfortable watching it. I cut out a piece of cardboard in the dimension of the TV and taped it to the wall to help determine the best viewing location, height and distance from the sofa. Also, if it is a wood burning fireplace like mine, you may not want to mount the TV over it due to the heat.
