Also look at a company called Mind The Gap. They have interesting papers. I have several samples and their non-woven papers say they are washable.

how messy are your guests?

I have silk wallpaper in both my guest bath and master bath and I have had no issues at all with it in any way.

There is very little humidity in either bathroom. My master bath where the shower is used frequently has a Panasonic fan that is automatic based on ambient humidity levels. It runs for about 30 minutes after a shower. Obviously this is also important to inhibit mold.

Where is the wallpaper meeting a wet area specifically?

@Lyn Nielson Well, hopefully not too messy! We're in our 30s and some of our friends/family that will be visiting have little kids, but they'll be staying in the upstairs guest rooms. The question came up because I reached out to customer service and they said "This paper is a digital paper. Not recommend for bathroom with high humidity it can however, be used in a powder room but not near water."

@Helen There is a shower stall in the bathroom, so the wallpaper would be run up to where the shower starts, behind the towel rack. So that area could get a bit wet as people are getting out of the shower and reach for their towel. There would also be a hand towel holder, so the area behind there could get a bit wet. I think it's less a question of mold, and more of how does the paper/ink hold up to humidity/moisture.

How expensive is it? If it is expensive, I wouldn't want to risk it. Keep looking - there are so many options. Hopefully you will be able to find something you like that won't cause you any worries. Or if you really love, go for it and see how it fares.

Can you purchase a sample? I'd start with that. I know how hard it is to pick wallpaper and if you've found one that you like, you owe it to yourself to test it. Hang the sample next to the shower you use. :)

Mixing it with paneling (or a tile wainscot) is smart and would look good with that paper I think. You definitely want to keep it out of the splatter zone (toilet included), but it will probably be okay in a well-ventilated dry area.

FWIW I don't use cloth hand towels because I would never use a communal hand towel nor would I expect any of my guests to do so and I also like to use a clean towel to dry my face in my own bathroom.

I have a basket that is filled with inexpensive rolled white wash cloths in my bathroom and I have inexpensive colored paper towels in the guest bath that is in a container on the counter.

Agree with Helen, I have pretty paper hand towels in the powder room and I also have a real hand towel. Most people use the paper hand towels, unless it is a family event and family don't usually mind using a hand towel used by a close relative!

There are plenty of water/humidity safe wallpaper options out there. However, if you love this one, then go for it! I would suggest you order an extra roll just in case some paper doesn't hold further down the line. If there is adhesion failure, you can easily replace it and ensure you have the same paper dye lot and availabilty. For the amount of use you are expecting, it is a calculated risk. Based on your plan to do paneling improves the performance factor and just make it a habit to remind guests to use the vent. Good Luck!

Seattle, have you ever been to a large party and when you go use the hand-towel in the powder room it is a soggy mess? The paper towels are no more wasteful than paper napkins at a party. This isn't for everyday family use, but for party guests. I don't use paper plates as I have enough plates for a group of at least 30, so I don't feel wasteful with 2 dozen paper hand towels being used in the powder room! I also keep a regular towel, check often and replace with a fresh one.

Update on this - we talked to a local wallpaper installer, and he strongly recommended against any woven paper in a bathroom. He has experience with the brand of what we found - Graham and Brown - said it's nice paper, but again, strong recommendation against full bathroom usage.

He suggested Cole and Son for similar patterns, so we're checking them out.

Any additional brands to consider?

Thibault makes beautiful wallpapers! I have a grass cloth in my powder room but it gets minimal use. It doesn’t have a shower or large hanging towel space. I agree that if you have wet towels hanging against your wall paper to dry, even if it is only 3-4 weekends a year….you need to be thoughtful about the nature of the paper that you use.

@ptreckel, my suggestion is faux grasscloth and washable. I would never advise grass cloth to be used in any area that has a toilet.

I happen to have some Graham & Brown wp samples. I just took one I know I'm not interested in. Got my palm very wet and rubbed it across the surface. The water immediately absorbed into the paper as if it were a paper towel!

You could try putting your beautiful paper sample in Google lense to see what it findsfindsfinds
Also, go to a brick and mortar that sells wallpaper (probably a paint store) . They will have many bookbooks if many samples of actual paper. Your problem then will probably making a decision among several you like. There are lots of quality brands.

Wanted to post a (hopefully final) update on this subject.

We found some nice designs from Milton and King, specifically their "Strelitzia" design. All of their papers are available as non-woven OR vinyl. We have a sample of the vinyl paper on order, and assuming it looks good, this is what we'll be going with. We're slightly concerned how the vinyl texture will look, but ultimately I think that's our best option.
