If you stand back and look at the entirity of that wall, it has too many little and random items. The best way to ground room in general is with size/consistency. Suggest dining room art that is also relevant to living room and add a console/tv on top to ground the living room‘s side (can this go a bit more to the left?). Remove the floating shelves, even if it means repairing and painting that wall. Hard to give specific examples without seeing your living room, but here goes.

All the small items create a distraction. I would place them someplace else and hang a large piece of art.

Thoughts on an oil painting of Italy? Any recommendations on where I can find paintings?

The artwork should be of whatever you love. An oil painting of Italy is fine. I see you have some toddler toys in your photo. Small children create fantastic abstract paintings. I would get a huge piece of MDF, paint it a background color, and with 3 sample pots of paint from HD give a little one 10 minutes to create a masterpiece.
