There are no rules. If you like them and the size works in the space, then it should work fine.

Thanks for the comments - Here's a photo. So the lantern over the sink is the one I like - the island lights are impossible to keep clean. From a design standpoint, would it better to install a recessed/can light over the sink instead and just do 2 lanterns over the island? Not have so many/3 hanging lights?? Help, i'm overthinking this.

Will the lanterns provide enough task lighting for the island?

My photo is terrible but there are 4 existing recessed lights around the island, too.

If you like the light, go for it over the island too
