A disappointment and some spring color

We had hoped to have a daylily (H. minor) in bloom by now. It had seven scapes coming up, but unfortunately, the last frost we had killed the buds. We even put a pot over it to try to protect it but it didn't work. The scapes on H. dumortieri were down in the foliage, so they look ok.

We went to a local garden center and bought Night Whispers. It already had a scape so we couldn't resist. It is a small-flowered tet. from Elizabeth Salter.

The iris have started to bloom here too. This first one is called Dolce.

I don't know the name of this one.

I like dahlias and I had to have this one.

The clematis is blooming too.

We are getting ready for the Herb Fair. We pulled this bromeliad out of the greenhouse to sell there. It is Aechmea fulgens discolor variegata.

Still haven't seen any scapes on the hybrid daylilies.

I watch Gardener's World with Monty Don (English gardening show) and the English all seem to grow an amazing amount of Dahlias. They make my mouth water. I've never had any success with them over the years, but gave one a shot again last year. It struggled all summer and then, just when it was about to recover and have blooms bigger then a 50 cent piece, we had an early freeze that killed the foliage back and then winter came and got the tuber as well. Yes, Dahlias are scrumptious, but I will just have to enjoy others efforts who can grow them in cooler climates. Your red/white one is the star of the show for me in this post.. Yummy.....Maryl

Nancy, Love the dahlia. I don't have any but I really enjoy looking! I hear that they are hard to grow [like Maryl's adventure] so I'm not willing to try. Also really love the color of the clematis. Sorry about the frost killing the buds on the one plant.

What a gorgeous dahlia! pretty clematis too. That late frost was a demon! It seems to have killed my large fig tree and the gardenis is looking very suspect too. I have seen bad effects on several of my daylilies too so I truly sympathize with you in your loss.

Pretty blooms here of all kinds! It appears than darn late frost got all of us somewhere. I have hosta with leaf damage and it appears my iris wont have much of a show this season. I cant grow dahlias either, yours is scrumptious.

Sorry the late freeze did in your early daylily buds. Night Whispers is a pretty little daylily, and I really like the two irises you posted! I have scapes on more than 30 seedlings now, but only four or five registered daylilies have scapes up and noticeable, and those are planted right next to the house.

Lovely display. I like your dahlias too. I haven't planted my tubers from last year yet. Maybe next week. I'm actually glad I'm not seeing any scapes yet here with the cool mornings but looks like we are over the hump and should have more settled weather.
