It's a jungle out there! I bet you don't have enough hours in the day to see everything that's in bloom.

You're correct, Melissa! Every time I go out the door, somebody else has started to bloom. I am particularly excited waiting for my 3 bushes of Little White Pet, and of course, Veilchenblau, all of which have astonishing numbers of teenie tiny blooms all over them.

Thank you all - here are two more photos I took yesterday. They are both of one bush of Madame Alfred Carriere, which is growing up to the top of an old plum tree in the wild part of our property. The first shows how high the crown of the tree is, with rose blooms, and the second one is of blooms further down, where the long canes droop down from above and have found some sun.

What a magical garden, Jackie. I took my mom to your neck of the woods (Sausalito, Tiburon areas) for Mother’s Day, must be one of the beautiful parts of the world. We especially enjoyed the Marin Garden and Arts Center in Ross, which has a beautiful little rose garden.

Yes, BenT - is not the Mart & Garden Center a beautiful place? It was a large estate in the 19th century, but the main house burned down in the very early 20th century, and some clever local ladies managed to raise money to turn it into a sort of park and community center, place for weddings, etc. Now it even has a theater, antique shop, etc. in addition to extensive lovely gardens. There were rumblings lately in our modern era to turn the entire thing into hundreds of apartments, but then suddenly local residents similar to those ladies go to work, and now it is protected as a National something or other, in perpetuity.

Mercy, Jackie! That's the most beautiful trellis I've ever seen! You answered my immediate question - how many and what kind of roses are on that trellis? Unbelievable! Pink and yellow together are pure magic; all soft and exciting at the same time.

Your garden is spectacular, Jackie! With its paths, benches, tuteurs and lush rose plantings, it reminds me of some of the most beautiful public gardens I have visited. How do you ever coax yourself away from those cozy benches to do daily chores and errands? I would ensconce myself with a good book and cup of tea and never leave! Carol

Thank you everyone - My DH and I are "standing on the shoulders" as they say, of 3 prior generations of gardeners in his family (the original German couple who came from Germany in the 1870s, whose son married a lady of German descent who also loved the garden, and whose son (my FIL) was a landscape gardener after he retired from the family printing business - all of them were excellent gardeners, who built our garden from scratch, and then maintained it for 85 years before we took it over. Most of the beds and paths are from them. The big change we did lately was to remove 2 gigantic shrubs - each was 12 ft high, 15 ft wide, and 25 ft deep - one was a barberry which had iron hard thorns 2-3 inches long which could pierce the tires of a car - not lamented at all! My DH used to get into the bed of his pick-up truck to prune it away from the driveway, so the cuttings could fall directly into the truck bed and be taken to the dump. They were replaced by him with my "New Garden", and he built a metal fence all around it, so it is deer proof! I filled that one with roses, and am working on rooting more cuttings for it from roses we had to take down off of the house. The best part is that all of the windows in our bedroom, living room, and even one end of our front porch look down on the garden, so I can see it from inside of the house. I feel so very lucky every day -
