This is an epic year around here, rose-blooms-wise, and yours are no exception, Rosefolly! Beautiful! Among mine, I have NEVER seen as many flowers on 'Crepuscule', 'Jaune Desprez', 'Mme Alfred Carriere', 'Le Pactole', 'Apricot Glow', etc. -- pretty much any class of rose -- as I have this year -- it is breathtaking and memorable.

Yes, more please! Especially Annie Laurie McDowell. Mine has survived rough treatment. She must be the toughest rose out there. I'm anxious to see if she will survive my TLC. Can you describe her form - a true climber or a large shrub? What a lovely backdrop all these gorgeous roses have!!

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA ALmD IS a true climber. It will throw very long, thick canes as long as there are roots under it and it has been allowed to mature into what it genetically wants. Look at this plant. This is ONE plant, not three grouped together as Austin suggested to make the plants look fuller and triple his sales. Those are 16" or so slump stones and that plant is spread out across 13' to 15' of wall. It's nearly a 6' tall wall and I regularly cut 4'+ of growth which threw itself into the sun over the top of the wall. The dog was a white Golden Retriever, for scale.

Here it was a few years earlier..

What can limit that performance are: climates with too severe extremes which will limit the growth; insufficient roots under the plant due to either soil, drainage or incompatibility of soil/water to the root requirements; lack of support for the canes. As with many types, if you support the canes, they lengthen. If you don't and require them to support themselves, they thicken instead of elongate. MANY roses can be growth as either a shrub or a climber. This is one, but it's much more pleasing when supported and allowed to be the climber it wants to be. What always impressed me was, this is the NORTH side of that block wall. It receives sun from the top of that wall. All of that bloom is in reflected light from the yard and the house to the left of the photo. Yes, I borrowed the photos from HMF as they are my original photos and this was faster (and MUCH easier) than looking for them in the box of thumb drives.

I grew Silver Moon as a free standing mound for years in the Newhall garden. Was it a "shrub"? Not by any definition, but it was free standing and self supporting. It was the size of a mini van, but it stood on its own.

Rosefolly, your rose garden is magnificent! I have felt so inspired by everyone in CA who has whittled to meet fire codes and yet managed to reconfigure everything back into paradise. Thank you so much for sharing! Carol

Kim, I'm so grateful for you taking the time. ALmD got some pretty sorry treatment last year. I was shocked she has survived. I was all set to contact Steve Singer to see if we could start over with another one.

I do remember seeing your photos on HMF, but thought she had that perfect form due only to your expertise. I'm sure I have some surprises in store since our climate is SoCal hot during the summer and Siberia cold during winter - sometimes. I can put her on a low fence to drape, or install a metal trellis (already have) behind her if needed. I thought she might be a "climber" like Darlow's Enigma, but I will treat her like a real climber. Whatever form she decides to take will be alright with me. I'm just thrilled to have her.

The ALmD in your photos is absolutely stunning. I love the vase, or fan-shape form. And to think she does all this in mostly shade. Many thanks for responding. Your White Golden was a wonderful model.

@flowersaremusic z5 Eastern WA, you're welcome! Being budded, ALmD has the best chance for success. I hope Zone 5 isn't too extreme for it. You may well have a shrub performance due to the weather extremes. Those photos were taken in 9b, Santa Clarita Valley where there was "winter" (probably like your "spring") and hot summers. The dog was a sweet heart, though not mine.

Expect the unexpected with houzz forums. I am plagued with gremlins creating 'gobbled' wordsbookwords continually. I have deleted more posts than I can even count...very frustrating.

My advice is to just go with the flow, and don't let the faulty tech system rattle you.
