Looks like an entryway. Tiles look fun. I would remove the shelf and hang some art there. A couple small shelves maybe on left of closet, not sure if you need them.

Are those tiles genuine slate?

Loose the shelf and repaint the walls to pull out a colour from the tiles.

Ditch that particular shelf, though you could put another more modern one in its place. Update the flooring. I'd swap out the louvered door.

An entry should suggest what comes beyond, and we can't see the "beyond" - a living room a floor in that room....it's a mystery.

LOVE the floor. That IS modern, as in MCM. What do you mean by modern? The shelf might be replaced with a simple natural wood, art above. The space looks tight for much more. But I vote to keep the floor!

Really comes down to your taste/needs, the adjoining space and your budget.

Flooring is the first decision, as that will influence choices. Suggest searching “small front entry” on Pinterest to decide if you want to decorate around or change, and to see decor ideas.

Option 1: Just update the shelf and accessorize.

Option two: coordinate the entire area, keeping in mind the adjoining flooring and room. A narrow bench is always a practical choice.

It’s tiny entry- is it the front door? Imagine greeting guests, and getting them in the door while accepting a bottle of wine or taking their coats while they are holding a casserole dish. Can they put a coat on or take it off in the area without being crowded by shelving or a table?

Leave the great floor, ditch the shelf and maybe update the baseboard.
