I don't see anything wrong with the FP except the mantel seems too thin and too deep.

Remember that whatever you select has to work with the hard surface floor we see in your photo. This is not the direction I would install the wood but the app didn't give me a choice.

Thank you!! I agree the mantel does look thin. What do you mean by too deep? Would this look better with a thicker mantel that doesn’t jut out as far?

The flooring color is a light brown similar to the second picture. Planks will be going in the opposite direction as shown die to the hallway.

I’m wondering if it will look odd if we paint the fireplace and wall above the same color as the walls surrounding, or if it would be better if we chose a color that popped just for the brick?

The mantel looks like it’s about 12” deep. Should be 6” max

Take off the mantle, and investigate what is behind the top panel. That and your budget will help determine next steps. If there’s more brick, paint it all the same color. A new mantle that echoes your style, whether that’s a rustic chunky beam, sleek concrete, traditional wood….

I agree with BevFLA…..you don’t really have a mantle currently, but a (too deep) shelf. Depending on what you’re doing in the rest of the house, you could just paint the FP, brick included if you don’t care for this color, then add a simple, nice (perhaps reclaimed) beam that goes with your floors instead….instant character. Since we don’t know your style, furniture etc, I’d recommend searching through Houzz photos; you can look for very specific pics (“corner fireplaces with light wood floors”), then use filters to narrow them down (“transitional, eclectic, modern” etc); save the ones that speak to you in an ideabook, and you’ll have your direction.
