Could you speak on its winter hardiness? Not that we're even in remotely the same climate, but if you get winter dieback on it then I for sure will too.

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Here in Portland, it is completely winter hardy. I prune it lightly after bloom. In the spring, I cut out the deadwood that develops under the giant mass. Other than that, I just let it go! Carol

@roseseek Thank you, Kim! It is rather fun to have been gifted this rarity. I can only guess that the Heirloom cutting came from a cane of JC that was destined to grow tall. What are the odds? I don’t think Paul has seen it in my garden. When he visited, things were a bit rushed and my garden was a mess. I don’t know if he has seen a Cl. JC elsewhere in commerce. I’ll check in and ask if he’d like to visit my plant sometime. It should probably be propagated. It’s a gorgeous thing in full bloom! Vigorous, healthy, etc. Carol

...boo hoo, and to think that I used to have this rose but wound up shovel pruning it! Though I allowed it to grow as it wanted, it never bloomed,so out it went. Probably the fault was the usual one-overly poor, inadequatly prepared soil...

I was sent a Jacques Cartier by mistake from Heirloom Roses. I ordered a Comte de Chambord and received Jacques Cartier instead. It's a happy accident, however, as I grow Marchesa Boccella and wanted to compare the blooms to JC to see if they are the same rose.

My Jacques Cartier is a two year old plant, only 1 foot tall due to rabbit nibbling and a spring freeze last year. I look forward to seeing how it does in the future.

How interesting and what a find! My shrub-form 'Jacques Cartier' is a super-star and quite remotant, but I only cut it back hard (by half) each winter and then only do moderate deadheading at other times. Otherwise it would be tall-ish (like 7' - 8''), sprawling all over and thus annoying me, but no-way, no-how would it be more than 12'!

Carol, what an exciting, wonderful, absolutely gorgeous rose! I didn't know there was a climbing form, and for sure it's much more glamorous, I think, than the bush; which has always seemed rather short to me. You have a treasure!

I too have this rose. I got it from Heirloom over 20 years ago as the bush form of J.C. It climbs into a crabapple and onto a seven foot high trellis fence. I garden in Marin County, Ca.

@jodydoss Yes! You are my west coast Climbing Jacques mate! I think we are rare twins. :) It’s so great to meet you and see another JC the size of mine! I guess Heirloom somehow stocked at least a couple of these climbers back in the day. Mine is around 20 years old, too. It’s interesting that Climbing JC was never listed in their catalogs. Your plant looks to be much better sited than mine, next to your pretty arch with a crabapple tree to climb. I need to retrofit some kind of not-too-awkwardly-placed support under its unexpectedly giant self. As soon as I get a skinny minute, I’m planning to post some shots on HMF. There is literally one photo of this rose, and it’s a close-up of an open bloom. Your Climbing JC is SPECTACULAR! If you have a chance to post that full shot of yours on HMF, I bet everyone would be as thrilled as I am to see it. Thank you so much for connecting on this thread! So cool! The blooms look exactly like my Jacques Cartier except mine stays short. Both Carol's and Jody's look stunning...yay for a climbing Jacques. :) :)
