I have HF Young. I don’t cut back the blooms. When they’re gone, I actually like the look of the flower center after the leaves are gone. I do cut it back in early spring yearly. Interesting though, my flowers are a deep reddish purple…..gets a lot of morning sun.

I try to get it to rebloom so I don't leave the seed heads. The color is  more of a light lavender. The phone camera makes it whatever it thinks is the smart thing to do. 🤷

Leaving the seedheads in place - not deadheading - has no impact on whether or not a type 2 clem will rebloom. Some do....some don't. But deadheading will not alter that characteristic either way.

So, the usual wisdom about dead heading producing more blooms because energy required for seed formation is conserved does not apply?

It does not. This is not a blanket practice.......not all plants will respond to deadheading by producing more flowers. In fact, this practice is more closely associated with annuals and a few herbaceous perennials and very little to do with most vines, shrubs and trees.
