I'd leave the cabinets alone and put in a sage green backsplash made out of ceramic subway tile. Like this:

what's weird is the curb on the countertop.

that is considered a back splash, and generally you do not have that AND tile above.

If you can have that curb knocked off... Gently, then add the backsplash tile of your choice, as far up the wall as you like.

The white cabinets sound like a nice refresh. Sample whites IN your home, with the lighting you have, natural and artificial. If you plan to remodle in a few years, as you have stated in this thread, Why not paint the cabinets, it will give you an idea of what you do want down the line

Sabrina. These are cherry cabinets and I am not sure if I am fond of the color... but I know paints will eventually peel.  We plan to gut out the kitchen in 5 years or so when we have the money. Do you believe as an interior designer that painted cabinets devalue the house ? We live in a million dollar home.  

Do you think kitchen under lighting would make it look good ?

I think you have nice finishes, the space just needs some styling - have you worked with an interior designer before? they would really help. If it were me, I would paint the walls something warmer than the white, add a fabulous rug or 2, add bamboo blinds at the windows for texture, change the cab hardware and ruthlessly declutter

If you're going to gut and remodel the kitchen in five years anyway, I'd do as little as possible. You can live with the cherry cabinets for the time being. No sense in throwing money at something you're going to tear apart in a few years. Save that money and put it toward the remodel.

I agree, why waste money on something you are going to gut in 5 years. Save/invest the money and use it to increase your budget when the time comes.

What I would do, is try to organize my spaces a bit more, so the kitchen has a fresher and de-cluttered look, which will make it a more pleasant space to work in.
