Yes, I was thinking of off-white or cream. Super light colored rugs throughout

The walls, countertops and backsplash are already light, so despite the dark wood cabinetry, it doesn't read as gloomy or cave-like. Splashes of yellow (a bowl of lemons) or amparo blue (delphinium, cornflowers) and rugs with a brighter (maybe beach-ier?) feel would also go a long way. This one is super neutral, since I don't know what color scheme your furniture is, but you could always introduce pops of color depending on your existing furniture.
