Workout leggings for large calves & cankles?

last modified: 3 years ago

Adding some context: for my size 10/12 body, my calves measure about 17”. Most wide calf boots top out at 16”. I can’t wear most slim leg pants because of it.

I’m so tired of my workout leggings being too tight! I have always had oversized calves and ankles despite being a normal size. Lately they are making my legs swell where they are too tight. Anyone here have the same problem and found some leggings that are more ample without being plus-size? I’m a 10/12. TIA

I wear capri length tennis-y looking skort legging combos for working out. Would they work for you or do they still cut in the wrong spot on your calf?

Calves have been the bane of my existence all my life, until 5 years ago, when I started Iodine supplements. My custom riding boots are now TOO big. They are not slim by any stretch of the imagination, but I can wear regular calf boots now.

Try Old Navy. I have a couple of theirs. Do not try Fabletics. They run very small in the leg.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the comments. I do pilates and my wide leg pants can get caught up in the equipment. I’ll keep looking too.

I purchased full length cotton tights from Walmart. They are SUPER stretchy! They DO NOT shrink when I wash them in hot water & dry in a hot dryer. Very soft and comfy! They retain their shape...and do not stretch out. These look like "them". Link

They "had" black or grey when I purchased mine a month ago. I have the problem of women's pants being too short, otherwise I'm an off the rack 10/12. I purchased a Large in these....and they ARE long enough! ❤️

I have several pairs of these inexpensive capris from Walmart. They are more of a soft cotton stretch material than the shiny polyester most work out clothes are made from. They fit close to the body but not tight.

    Walmart capris

Mine is about a 1/4" smaller than yours and we use similar sizes otherwise. I've had luck with Marika Brand and buy them off of Amazon. Both long legs and the ones don't go all the way to the ankle, but is longer than capris - I think they call them mid-calf. The capri's are fine too. I usually get the ones with side pockets to hold my phone and keys.

I have capri leggings similar to czarina’s but mine are Jockey brand. Not tight but not loose/baggy.

I was going to suggest joggers, as well. They are available in a somewhat slim silhouette that shouldn’t get in the way of your workout equipment.

Another endorsement for the Vuori joggers. I like the Lululemon joggers as well but prefer the Vuori for comfort.

Another Vuori jogger suggestion here too. Maybe go down a size if youre close and they’ll fit tighter. But the jogger part should fit your calves and come in so not to interfere with any equipment.

Thanks the issue with joggers is that the typical band at the bottom is too tight. Does the ribbing run large or extra stretchy??

I would say the Vuori joggers are quite stretchy - more so than the Lululemon. Our REI store carries them so if you have one close that may be a good way to give them a try.

I also have thick calves -- I love Beyond Yoga for a non-restrictive legging.. the spacedyed out of pocket legging is the one I usually get. There is also an Athleta legging.. the extra high rise salutation stash.. but I believe they just came out with a new style that looks interesting.

Neither is inexpensive but i have been very pleased with their fit, comfort and wear. I won't buy anything else.

The alternative is to buy wider legged ones and have a tailor take them in to fit. If you don't have an "off the rack" body, which few of us do, then tailors or our own sewing skills become our best friends.

I feel like the bottom band is pretty stretchy.

These are my favorite every day leggings that I wear while I work from home. I also wear them for weight lifting, biking, gardening, and a variety of other active pursuits. They are incredibly stretchy and I think would be very forgiving in the calf area. I like the capri length, but they do have an ankle length as well. Fairly inexpensive on the Big A (in the scheme of leggings). They come in lots of colors too, though I pretty much only wear black because I'm a weirdo.

Thanks everyone. I have a bunch to consider.

I was reminded of my priorities when this popped up in FB today. But even when I was a size 4, most skinny pants and tall boots wouldn’t fit!

My calves are I think a little larger than average. I do struggle in some skinny pants and jeans where I simply cannot fit my calves. And it has happened a few times in exercise leggings, but not too often. My other favorites are Athleta, but they don't carry those models anymore, so I can't recommend anything specific from Athleta right now.
