Kara Louise is a beautiful color. Your seedlings are all nice but the first one is really special. That pattern is really neat and it nice that it has a nice scape too.

Your Kara Louise is so much more pure red than mine. That is such a pretty red. I like the color on the Integrated Logistics seedling. Your seedlings all look good even with lower bud count and shorter scapes.

Nan, Maryl and Kate - Kara Louise is not normally that deep a red. It was night temps in the 50s that did it. Maryl, Kara Louise is somewhat tender. It lost fans after the December deep freeze and has really low bud count this time. It's never had a problem before, but I don't think we've ever had three nights in a row below zero since I've lived in Nashville. And it didn't help that it wasn't mulched last fall. KL normally has tall, well budded and branched scapes. I have five evergreen Hansen reds. Diver Down was hurt the worst (9-inch scapes with a bud count of 2-4) Twentieth Century Fox fared the best (scapes are almost as tall as usual with bud counts in the mid teens).

Nan - I think the patterned seedling is pretty special, so I'm crossing it with some of other patterned seedlings this morning.

Kara Louise is so pretty, guess it is one I better leave off my list though if it is tender for you. I know this was an exceptionally bad year though. Stenciled Infusion is lovely as always, and a good pattern on your Tully Mars seedling.

On the positive side, this season may test the hardiness of some of your intros, such as Bubblegum Queen. It could also be that the early short scapes are the result of that March freeze, not so much the December cold blast. Is the pattern consistent on the Tully Mars seedling?

Mantis - This is the first flower open on the Tully Marrs seedling. No patterns are consistent here when the temps climb into the 90s - not even the ones touted by their hybridizers as consistent. Updated to say two blooms today had the same pattern. Bubblegum Queen has shorter scapes this time and fewer buds. Some winters it keeps its foliage and other winters it goes totally underground. So it's a semi-evergreen that's much closer to evergreen than dormant.

Nancy - I think if Kara Louise had been mulched, it would not have lost fans. It did well in a previous winter when it was mulched and temps were under 10 degrees for several days.
