We had school house lights in an timber frame home and they were not bright enough for me. But as i age I find i need more light.

For cost concerns nothing beats a homemade light. I get a lot of inspiration from Hobby Lobby finds and put them together for $60 or so.

The age of the house matters. Is it Victorian or Craftsman? Is it 1920 cottage or 1850 farmhouse?

For the record, none of the above would look appropriate for my house.

Is this a restoration? 1904 wiring is probably knob & tube which is no longer allowed but can be maintained if not disturbed but I would replace it. Perhaps the wring has been updated; check to be sure it's grounded and not aluminum. The insulation of old armored cable (BX) can dereriorate where exposed in the boxes. Always use an electrician.

My 1891 house was electrified in 1903 with push button switches and globes in the center of ceiings attached to the old gas pipes. It was terrible. I removed all of it and installed a lot of recessed fixtures which is not noticible in the 10 ft ceilings. I don't know the height of your ceiling or the nature of the rooms.
