Older sun tolerants are doing well. I knknow they are adjusting to my yard conditions, but it’s hard to look at a garden like this after all the time and $$$ spent.

Yes Debra you got a lot of new ones but you know they will adjust from your previous experience. I hope your shade arrives soon and in the meanwhile the umbrellas will do. Did you already have them or did you rush out and get them?

bummer..years ago I read ”gardening is heartbreaking”..so true..we spend time, energy and money and yet sometimes the result is disappointment..hang in there..

would a paniculata hydrangea work there?..

Ann, I actually had one large umbrella and got 2 at the Good Will for $3 each. Then a neighbor gave me two this morning that were from her recently passed father’s home. Another neighbor gave me an umbrella stand to use.

Laurie, I have a Limelight Hydrangea Tree in the back, but it needed a hard cut back last fall so it’s not going to be as full as last year. Didn’t think about that at the time…..

mikgag, I feel even more sorry for you…..nothing you can do but wait for the second flush of leaves….that frost damage is sooooo hard to bear.

Debra, Hope the umbrellas work for you until the shade cloth arrives. Hope it doesn't get windy until the cloth arrives, I lost about 12 hostas this past winter so I feel your pain.

It promises to get cooler. Hopefully. I planted a bunch of mine out too. 

Spraying leaves with water bottle in the morning or any time when sun is not hitting directly helps.

it is a great photo and when all is said and done (shaded and recovered ) Print it.

i really think youll see desperate humor in it later. it belongs in a gardening book.

are the umbrellas secured? when i tried umbrelling, a light wind just blew them away. i just didnt want to chase umbrellas that day…

Two of the umbrellas are in stands, the other two are secured with large U shaped pins that you use to steak garden fabric. Very very strong wind would blow them away but a breeze is ok.

Hope it all works out for you! I dont remember who you have in the sun, do you have June in the sun??? I have a few in almost all day sun doing marvelous for a few years, just gotta keep them watered.

Thanks sherry! I have June, First Frost (trying in the sun), Punky, Gabriel’s Wing, Teaspoon, Wyle Green Cream, Heart and Soul and Winter Snow. All of these are new. I was surprised to see First Frost on the sun tolerant list. I have one in shade and thought I would try on in sun. It has burned the most. I may have to rethink where it is. I also have Squash Casserole in a different bed with less sun and it is doing fine. Maybe that’s where I should move FF to……I’ll wait and see.

My First Frost are in dappled shade and do ok.

Thanks miles, I did move it to the front where it will get some sun, but less than it was. The sun shade arrived and it is up, but not shading the hostas I wanted shaded so I still have an umbrella on Winter Snow.
