Thursday's Garden Walk

last modified: 3 years ago

It actually rained for about three or four minutes today - probably just enough to ruin the crosses I did. But at least the clouds kept the temps down. We're supposed to be back in the 90s tomorrow.

Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #2 finally had a clean bloom. That area of the garden was hit hard by thrips.

Lightning Round is blooming later than usual this season.

Browns Ferry Queen of Hearts is having an unusually good year with lots of lateral branching and more buds that usual. It's a bit taller than past years too! That's Edge of Your Seat in the background.

Blue Eclipse has nice tall scapes this time.

Royal Seal only has one short scape on its two fans, and it's blooming much later than usual. This is the third year I've had it, and there has been no fan increase. It probably needs to be grown farther south. I had to fight the bees for the pollen on it this morning.

Joan Derifield had a good group today.

This is the most blooms I've had on Ghost Gifts so far. The bloom is usually 5 inches, but with the lack of rain they're now in the four-inch range.

I Lava You lost the buds on three scapes to deer, but the clump still looks pretty good.

All American Chief

Sensational Heart had another wonderful clump this morning.

Clumps are always pretty and Sensational Heart, All American Chief, and I Lava You meet that criteria. Blue Eclipse and Royal Seal are standouts. I am still in this weather training mode with thunderstorms rolling through every day.

Good to hear you have some clump shots despite the deer. It looks like the reds were showing off today. Another lovely photo of one of your babies, scrumptious color.

Some beautiful clump shots, Debra. It seems the rain is all or nothing as we had storms again, but blessedly no hail this time. Sensational Heart is a lovely clump, All American Chief is really something. Love it. Beautiful clump of I Lava You in spite of the deer. Ghost Gifts is a pretty clump. Joan Derifield is always pretty. Royal Seal looks Royal..

90s tomorrow.Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #2 is a really pretty one; not a stinker in the bunch. I'll bet that was a pretty garden walk.

Kay and Kate - I wondered how you fared with today's storms. The rain is nice, but dangerous storms are not. Thanks for all your comments!

Sherry - The deer have left a lot of my nice clumps alone. Knock on wood. It's too bad they totally wiped out Lillian's Thin Ice, Sweet Prairie Wind, Cameroon Night, and Men In Black. They would have been pretty clump shots this week too.

All American Chief seems to be good regardless of adversity. Blue Eclipse, I see, is a Smith cultivar. What is your opinion now of I Lava You, as initially you were not excited? Plants seem to be improving as the season progresses.

Your clump shots are beautiful. I also like the ruffles on Lightning Round. Your seedling is beautiful too.

Very nice grouping of multi blooms. Your foliage looks very good for having a lack of rain. I guess the hose watering is better than no watering.

Sensational Heart is a scene stealer. Sure is a pretty one. I like your seedling too. Pink Extrodinaire x. What color would you say it is?................Maryl

Maryl - The Pink Ex seedling is a medium purple with a lavender watermark. It has a double edge of white and lavender. The cooler the nights are, the more burgundy purple it looks. When thinks heat up, it's more of a lavender purple. It's siblings are pink, red burgundy, and another purple.

Nice bunch of daylilies. Really like Pink Extraordinaire X $exy Samantha #2 a lot. Also like Queen of Hearts and Joan Derifield.

Brad - Your favorites all have nice watermarks!

Mantis - All American Chief has been impacted somewhat by the weather. While a few of the scapes are the registered 32 inches this Spring, most are 27-28 inches tall. Only about half of the fans have scape, and bud count is much lower than past years.. As for I Lava You, it's always been a good performer. I just don't care for the orangey red color as much as I do the more pure red of All American Chief. Blue Eclipse has tall scapes this year. It's never had more than 12 buds per scape. I think it has 10-11 this time. So it was not much affected by the warped weather changes.
