Flooring design advice

Hi all, Need some design advice. I'm planning to transition my 2nd floor and stairs from carpet to hardwood. My first floor is mahagony wood(1st pic) but planning the second floor to have lighter color(white oak, pic attached). I need ideas on how to make the stairs(this is the front entrance) work so that they go well with both the floors. Not planning to stain the stairs preferably (as will have to get another guy), but flexible.

My problem is how to make the lighter wood work with mahagony wood. Each stairs have darker wood on the side, Would lighter color in the middle and darker color on the sides looks good or should we do the stairs in dark color itself or stain the stairs to match white oak? My plan is to change the first floor to lighter color too, but not anytime soon.

I'm confused. In the first paragraph you mentioned that you aren't planning to stain the stairs but in the second it sounds like you are.

Or are you leaving the carpeting and just wondering if you should restain the edges of the stairs.

My gut reaction is that this is your front entrance, it is what people see when they come in the front door and no one will know what the upstairs floors look like so I would, for now, treat the front entrance as one unit until you replace the floor downstairs.

Thanks for the advice. I've updated the post. Not planning to keep the carpet at all, as my son is getting crazy allergies. Yes you are right that's the front entrance. Staining is harder just because will have to find another guy to do it.

Your first floor and stairs should be the same finish. Change the finish once you reach the second floor. I would keep a runner on the stairs, even sisal or jute, to keep your work to a minimum.

I always do stairs to match what oyu are standing on when looking up the stairs , so in this case the same as the main floor floors.
