Thymus quincecostatus in my rock garden. I chop overgrowing ends and use it for cooking pretty often. They just never seem to stop growing…

Campanula punctata grown from seed in its third year. Perenall, I think I have been controlling it well but they somehow managed to escape in my zoysia lawn so there is nothing I can do on that anymore except just keep mowing it lol

I have a small area south of my low deck that slopes southward and I've placed a gravelly soil there and call it a rock garden... that's where I'm trying to incubate my spring gentialns, I did have a bloom last year, but not yet this year.

A fall gentialn is established nicely in that area but the flowers are tiny.

I need to refresh my gentian knowledge and figure out what varieties I have.

a2mom, what is the yellow fringy plant, thalictrum? I've been trying that from seed for a couple of years to no avail.

Yes, it is yellow meadow rue, Thalictrum flavum ssp. Glaucum. I bought it back in 2011 from Bluestone Perennials but they no longer carry it. I bought it as a small started plant.

We’re getting into consistent warm days so the sunny spots in my yard are showing their colors!

Daylily border I installed in March to replace some overgrown plants. Pic taken from neighbor’s drive - that’s my house in pic. The new shrubs between day lilys are Osmanthus Goshinki - there’s a mature one there to right not shown in pic. Day lily is filler until they grow up.

Elfin Thyme at front entry.

Lavendar blooms not open yet but still smells heavenly when coming out side garage door. The big one was transplanted last fall to this sunny south exposure & has doubled in size. The varigated one on right is new this spring. Heuchera has been there several years. Marigolds for color & because I like them! This is a down hill dryer slope.

I know I am stating the obvious but gosh lupines are so darn beautiful. Very nice @GardenHo_MI_Z5.

@rouge21_gw (CDN Z5b/6a) Thank you! I have never heard of or seen this plant. I MUST have one! I looked at the link you posted & see gardengal’s comments - she lives north of me in WA so it must do well in my area. I also found a Youtube vid & learned there are a couple different colors— Ragen Cajen, Little Redhead & Indian Pink. The video was pretty informative & did mention zones 6 -9 so works for me!

Kathy what cleanup can be done is almost completed. If you enlarge the pic of the Persicaria you can see a big tree going back and sideways plus broken tops. I spent big $ getting the trees leaning out over the garden. The forest will have to take care of itself. The same fellas came in with a bucket truck to clear the hydro lines. No doubt there will be a bit less shade in areas but not enough to affect the garden...so far so good. Thank you for your concern and thank you for your kind words! Yes thankfully all the pics are current. I have been very impressed with both the Geum & Painted Woman. Your yard is fabulous!

Thanks GardenHo. My SIL had two sprained knees so could not help but my DD and I did what we could. Happy you liked the Iris and it would not be June without the orchid!

Peren / Laurie I do see that leaning tree & broken tops, Ouch! OTOH, as time goes by, snags & dead wood do have their own sculptural beauty and they provide shelter & food for the woodland creatures. That’s one way to look at it, yes? Our prior home up north in Seattle area was in a rural area & next to large undeveloped acreage. I remember the sound of huge limbs breaking and falling from the heavy load of ice during some winter freezing rain storms. Though our home wasn’t in any danger of tree damage the sound all through the dark of night was so scary. It sounded like a war zone and it’s not something one forgets.

Wow Peren sounds like it was a big expensive clean up..so sorry to hear.

KW those sounds must have been very scary! I had a tornado go through my area a few years back and although I didnt hear the trees as the storm was so loud, I saw the devastation afterward. It made my heart sink. Thankfully minimal damage here and I hope to never experience that again!!

@GardenHo_MI_Z5 Tornado! Another life altering experience! I experienced one in mid-70’s when we lived in Omaha courtesy of USAF. That one went down I-80 & caused a lot of damage. What I remember is the greenish hue of the sky / atmosphere. That ice storm in Seattle area - it was a good thing that the trees coming down weren’t the huge Douglas Firs that dominate the woodlands around these parts. The trees were alder & such that grow up fast (and weak) in wetlands which is what a large part of that acreage was.

KW yes scary green smokey skies! And those ice storms are no joke either. Just had one this year. Crazy weather everywhere! Mother Nature has been very angry....

The first Dahlia of the season is opening up and the overwintered fuschia is finally ready to bloom. Last year's overwintered Nicotianas are looking their best right now. So much so that I am potting up all the volunteers growing from the compost/mulch I made from last year's cleanup.

@getgoing100_7b_nj Wow - that dahlia! That thyme in my font yard has generated lots of nice comments from passersby so I think I made a good choice. My little dog likes to lounge on it when she’s keeping me company out there & she smells lovely afterwards!

Yes Kathy that is truly the only way to look at it. The forest will slowly renew itself here. The sound of breaking trees/limbs is quite shocking and the devastation we see in the aftermath. I know you have been through just about every natural disaster there is going. It does leave you feeling shell shocked.

Thank you GardenHo it was very costly. These short forms are so ambiguous. My son-in-law was off work for 3 months with the sprained knees. I hope you never go through a tornado again! My DD and I were out last night and there was a tornado warning where we were . We high tailed it home and only had rain here....phew.

getgoing wow is right. That Dahlia is an incredible colour. The orchid lasts about 3 weeks normally but only about. 2 wks this year because of drought conditions.

LMC, Seconding all the admiration for the Kousa dogwood and hosta combo. That looks like it could be in a magazine. Is that tall phlox (P paniculata) blooming, or an earlier phlox? We’ve got a while before our P paniculata blooms, so I was really surprised to see your photo. Maybe it’s a different phlox? Lovely rose. I have none, so I enjoy all the GW pics.

Garden, your lupine are nice this year. Were those planted by you or are they reseeded? I find sometimes the reseeded ones can spread to weird places and I have to “re-establish” the original lupine area. Wondering if you have the same experience. You lilac looks lovely and determined. I hope it rewards you with scent.

Cecily, I’ve never grown Camp glom, but I’m going to investigate. I do love that en masse planting.

And your blue poppy—WOW! Keep sharing that one! I notice your Dicentra is still blooming. We’ve had very very cool and wet weather for about three weeks, and the Dicentra are loving it. I don’t remember them continuing to bloom this late before.

Heruga, if I remember correctly NJ has had some real weather challenges, especially with drought. Is that right? Your garden is doing so well. I have not grown Camp punctata for fear of it escaping. It’s lovely traveler, for sure!

GardenHo, I think every single vista of your garden must be photo worthy. Trust me, I carefully pick those camera angels in mine, but yours is so lovely ALL the time, it seems. You have too many beautiful pics. How old is your pink salvia? Mine are short-lived, as expected, and I’ve been too remiss on replacing them with new ones. Yours are lovely. You and peren remind me that Persicaria is still on my wish list. For some reason it isn’t easy to find here.

Mazerolm, I am not an iris fan, but after seeing yours I just changed my mind. They are AMAZING! I’m used the standard purples, and after inheriting a 6’ clump that could not be divided until we had a somebody working on the driveway with a backhoe dig it up, I’ve avoided them. Yours are a world apart from those. Do they expand quickly and require often division? I would love to get some of them.

One tornado story—growing up in the South meant tornados were a part of a normal spring. You took it seriously, but they were certainly no surprise. One year a rival school had their prom the night before ours, and a strong tornado went right over the venue. They all had to get underneath the tables and listen as it did serious damage to the roof until it passed. We got to see all the local damage the next day as we did our prom activities, but I must say they certainly have a far more amazing prom story to tell than I’ll ever have!

I’m only included two photos. Our cool wet weather for the past three weeks has been a poppy heaven. This year is the most amazing I’ve ever seen. They have lasted so long this year and looked so good. This poppy has finally matured enough to make this combo one of my favorites. I think I put the poppies there 3, maybe 4, years ago, but this year it came into its own. I wish I had taken another photo afrter most of the poppies had opened. I’m starting to love the versatility of apricot/salmon in the garden.

I have elfin and wooly thyme, Irish moss which self seeded, Tiny Rubies Dianthus, and Hens & Checks between pavers. I really like the H&C as long as they’re placed where they won’t be stepped on. The elfin thyme was planted about three weeks ago but will have filled in the cracks by next year.

@deanna in ME Barely zone 6a, more like 5b: thanks! I ordered some irises from Canadian growers, but most of what I have was developed by American hybridizers. Check out Sutton, Mid-America and Shreiners. I think they’re the biggest ones!

Deanna, yea weather hasn't been very favorable in NJ as usual. We had terrible May drought and then now we have 2 weeks of rainy weather. Weather just gets worse and worse year by year unfortunately but I try to keep up on the watering so somehow managing to keep things alive. The campanula sure is a spreader but flowers are lovely and is a tough plant in general, why I like it so much.

@GardenHo_MI_Z5 and @KW PNW Z8 PN that is actually *2* Goatsbeard plants. But yes each is quite large. (The last couple of years I debate about replacing them with something more...."flashy" but they are reliable performers in lots of shade and do pretty well in drier conditions.)
